Verlander Diagnosed with Shoulder Inflammation

Robert Rogers/MLB Photos via Getty Images (PITTSBURGH) — Detroit Tigers starting pitcher, Justin Verlander, had an MRI Tuesday that revealed the former Cy Young Award winner has inflammation in his right shoulder but no major structural damage.
“Really, there was no major structural damage,” Tigers skipper Brad Ausmus said. “At this point, we don’t expect him to go on the DL. We’re still kind of evaluating what the treatment options are, but there’s a possibility he may only have to miss a start and be back with us.”
While it’s a relief to the Tigers that Verlander hasn’t suffered a major injury, it’s still questionable whether he will make his scheduled start Sunday against the Mariners.
Verlander felt discomfort in his shoulder while pitching against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the team’s 11-6 loss Monday night. He lasted only one inning, allowing four earned runs, before being pulled.
The 31-year-old Verlander is having a tough season. The former American League MVP has pitched 158 2/3 innings this season, compiling a 10-11 record, 4.76 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 55 walks and 118 strikeouts.
Ausmus told MLB.com that he does not expect Verlander to go on the DL.
