Hong Kong Students Clash with Police During Pro-Democracy Protests

riots?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1411830506641iStock/Thinkstock(BEIJING) — Young pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong faced off with riot police Saturday after a night of scuffles and arrests.

A standoff between student protesters and Hong Kong police late Friday night resulting in more than 50 injuries and 13 arrests. The Hong Kong police used tear gas on the students when they attempted to storm into the city’s government offices. By Saturday morning, the gathering of student’s who were eventually cleared out.

The confrontation came at the end of a week-long protest against a Beijing ruling on how Hong Kong residents can elect their future leader. The protesters believe the ruling will eventually limit Hong Kong’s chance for true, free elections in 2017.

More protests are expected next week as pro-democracy activists plan to blockade Hong Kong’s central business district with a massive sit-in.
