Spud Farmers Face Losses

(SHELLEY, ID) – Local potato farmers are in danger of losing money on this year’s crop.

Farmer Jared Wattenburger of Shelley tells KIDK that last month’s heavy rains significantly reduced yields, although the spuds themselves have mostly retained their quality. He says he needs to make about $7 for 50 pounds of potatoes to break even, but most farmers are only getting $5 to $6.50.

Spud harvest begins around the end of this month, and continues through early-to-mid October.
