The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 68 points to end the day at 17137.36, the Nasdaq Composite added 20 to finish at 4582.90, and the S&P 500 gained 9 points at 2006.81.

The latest report from the Labor Department found that 142,000 jobs were created in August, highlighting the smallest gain in eight months and falling short of economists’ predictions.

Still, the national unemployment rate dropped to 6.1 percent, with experts attributing the dip to jobless individuals who stopped searching for employment.

Online retailer Alibaba plans to sell 123 million shares at $60 to $66 dollars a piece, with public trading beginning as soon as Sept. 18. Company executives are also expected to sell another 179 million.
