Madison Bumgarner pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings allowing four hits while fanning seven.

Bumgarner continues to stymie opposing lineups as he set a major league postseason record with 26 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings on the road.

His start wasn’t without a little controversy. In the bottom of the seventh inning with runners on second and third Tony Cruz at the plate for the Cardinals, Bumgarner stepped off the mound after being in the set position. Cruz and the Cardinals screamed for a balk but no call came. With the next pitch, Bumgarner struck Cruz out.

Travis Ishikawa and Brandon Belt each had and RBI for the Giants. Gregor Blanco drove in Hunter Pence on a throwing error from Matt Carpenter in the top of the second.

Game 2 starts Sunday as Jake Peavy will take the rubber for the Giants facing off against Lance Lynn for the Cardinals.
