Rene Russo Reveals Struggle with Bipolar Disorder
Published at(NEW YORK) — While taping an appearance on Queen Latifah’s daytime talk show on Monday, Rene Russo revealed that she has bipolar disorder.
As seen in a preview clip posted on People‘s website, the actress brought up the subject when Latifah asked her and her Nightcrawler co-star, Jake Gyllenhaal, to identify something in their lives that they’ve had to “push through.” Russo laughed, “Bipolar medication.”
Russo, 60, explained, “I pretty much hit a wall and then I realized, my mom said my whole childhood, that you’re stop-and-go. And then I stopped and I had to, like, whoa, that was it for me.”
Latifah asked Russo what motivated her to take medication. Russo answered, “I literally crashed, hit a wall and couldn’t get out of bed. I thought it was depression, but if you take antidepressants it speeds you up more, so I’m kind of stop-and-go.”
Russo added that it was an important topic to discuss: “I have friends who don’t want to go on the medication, and they are suffering.”
Latifah’s interview with Russo and Gyllenhaal will air on Oct. 30. The film Nightcrawler, directed by Russo’s husband Dan Gilroy, opens the next day.
