With 56 seconds on the clock, trailing 19-17, Terrapins kicker Brad Craddock lined up for a 43 yard field goal. Craddock measured his kick and snuck it inside the left upright.  Teammates swarmed onto the field congratulating the leaping special teamer.

Though the real drama of the game started before the opening kickoff.

When both team’s captains arrived at the center of the field for the coin toss, Penn State players extended their arms to shake hands – Maryland’s players refused.  A fight then broke out between several players from both teams.

Back in May, Penn State head coach James Franklin said he intended to recruit all the best players from the Maryland-DC area and said “I know there are other schools around here, but you might as well shut them down.”

As if there wasn’t enough emotion with being a new comer to the Big Ten as well as being a border state rival, Franklin’s comments obviously resonated with the Terrapins.

After the game Terrapins head coach Randy Edsall apologized for the handshake incident.

The win pushes Maryland’s record to 6-3 and they are now bowl eligible.
