Kane reports the players enrolled in “classes that didn’t meet and yielded easy, high grades awarded by the architect of the university’s academic scandal.”

Rashad McCants, a member of the 2005 championship team, told ESPN in June that he rarely went to a lecture during his time while enrolled at school and was awarded a spot on the deans list in the spring of 2005, even though he never attended any class.

In October the university released its own internal report that detailed how former chairman of the Department of African and Afro-American Studies, Julius Nyang’oro, and department manager Deborah Crowder created the fraudulent classes.

The NCAA reopened its investigation this summer after the ESPN report and reports from the News and Observer.
