Ferry Catches Fire Off Coast of Greece with Hundreds On Board
Published at(NEW YORK) — A Greek ferry caught fire between Greece and Italy with hundreds of people on board.
The accident took place near the island of Corfu.
Authorities confirm at least one person has died.
At least 150 people have already been rescued, but Greek and Italian rescue helicopters and vessels are still struggling to reach the burning ferry.
The rescue efforts are being hampered by 55 mile-per-hour winds which are pushing the ship towards the straight between Italy and Albania. Italian officials say merchant ships are now lining up nearby to form a barrier to protect the ferry and facilitate a rescue.
