Former SC Gov. James Edwards Dead at 87
Published at(COLUMBIA, S.C.) — Former South Carolina Gov. James Edwards passed away on Friday at the age of 87.
Edwards served in the South Carolina state Senate for two years, before being elected as governor in 1974. During his only term, he served for two years on the National Governors Association’s Executive Committee.
Edwards later served as the Secretary of the Department of Energy from 1981 to 1982.
Current S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley posted on Facebook on Friday that Edwards was “someone who appreciated the opportunities and challenges of this office.” Edwards’ “love for South Carolina inspired him to serve until his last day,” she added.
