ISIS Gains Ground Against Syrian Government

izustun/iStock/Thinkstock(DAMASCUS, Syria) — Militant group ISIS is gaining ground in their fight against the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad.
Activists say that the Islamic State has captured a village next to an airbase in eastern Syria in an attempt to curtail the military’s airforce.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the extremist militants have already killed at least 30 Syrian soldiers in efforts to overrun the base. More than two dozen Islamic State fighters were also killed.
The attack on the base follows remarks by Syrian President Bashar al-Asaad that he would not step down amid increasing pressure from militant groups seeking his ouster.
Asaad also called the US-led airstrikes in Syria an “illegal intervention” that have little effect on the Islamic State and other hardline groups.
