One of those fans just happens to be one of the movie’s stars, actor Oscar Isaac.

“It was just, it was wild,” Isaac tells ABC News Radio. “It was wild to see that trailer. It was so emotional, you know, I think for everyone that saw it…particularly anyone that’s been a fan of it.”

It’s not known who Isaac plays in the J.J. Abrams film, but the actor can be seen briefly in the 88-second-long snippet piloting an X-Wing fighter. Isaac explains the teaser came as something of a surprise.

“This was three weeks after production shooting stopped. Three weeks after that, J.J. releases this trailer. He gives that to the fans. You know, I mean it just shows where his heart’s coming from, and that it looked that awesome already.”

Abrams, too, is a lifelong Star Wars fan; he even managed to sneak plucky droid R2-D2 into both Star Trek movies he directed.

For all the enthusiasm the trailer generated, it also caused some controversy, thanks to an opening shot of actor John Boyega in Stormtrooper armor. Boyega, a British-born black man, didn’t belong in the white armor, some griped online.

“It’s great that people just like openly show their racism,” Isaac laughs. “I mean it’s just like walk right into it buddy, you know? That’s one of the things I love the most about the trailer is that it opens with, you know, ‘Bam!’ Literally right in your face you know, deal with it.”

“What I really like too is the response to those people that are, you know, so negative,” he enthuses. “[T]he overwhelming response of all these voices coming up saying that they don’t accept that. And to feel the positivity of all those people, a much larger majority, I think is great.”

The Force Awakens, which also stars original trilogy cast members Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher, as well as Andy Serkis, Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley, opens Dec. 18, 2015.

Later this month, you’ll be able to see Isaac on the big screen in the buzzworthy film A Most Violent Year, opposite Jessica Chastain.
