“I want to thank Randy for all of his hard work and dedication,” Leafs general manager David Nonis said in a statement. “It’s never an easy decision to make when changing your leadership but our team was not trending in the right direction and we felt an immediate change was necessary.”

Assistant coaches Peter Horachek and Steve Spott will take over the coaching duties for the team’s game Wednesday night against the Washington Capitals, according to team officials.

Caryle entered the season on thin ice after management fired his assistants but decided to keep him on board to see if he could help turn the team around.

Heading into Wednesday night, the Maple Leafs sit at 21-16-3, which is good for eighth in the Eastern Conference.

Caryle took over during the 2011-2012 season and went 91-78-19 during his time with the organization.
