Rough Week for Markets Continues, Unemployment Claims Rise
Published at(NEW YORK) — A rough week on Wall Street continued Thursday with the fifth consecutive day of losses as all three major indices finished the session below where they began, prompted in part by an increase in the number of jobless claims reported by the Labor Department.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 102.69 to a close of 17,324.40.
The Nasdaq lost 68.5 to 4,570.82, and the S&P 500 dipped 18.54, ending the session at 1,992.73.
The Labor Department announced Thursday that 316,000 Americans filed for unemployment benefits for the week ending Jan. 10. That number was 19,000 higher than the previous week, which was also revised up from 294,000 to 297,000.
