“During our game against the New Orleans Pelicans on January 16, Tony Wroten suffered an injury to his right knee,” The team announced in a statement. “Over the past week, we have worked closely with Tony, our medical and sports performance teams, his representatives, and renowned specialists in order to reach an accurate diagnosis and provide him with the best possible care.”

In his third NBA season, the 21-year-old Wroten was having the best season of his young career. In 30 games he averaged 16.9 points, 5.2 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game while coming off the bench and starting for the team.

“I don’t think there is anybody else who can do what he did,” Brown said. “He was such a kamikaze, fearless competitor that this city fell in love with — they loved his energy.”

Wroten originally was selected 25th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2012.
