Car Shortages Possible Amid West Coast Seaports Labor Dispute
Published at(SAN FRANCISCO) — U.S. businesses are already feeling the pinch from the West Coast seaports dispute. And now, consumers might be next.
Unless there’s a breakthrough soon, car shortages are possible. Honda has already ordered a production slowdown at its U.S. and Canadian plants because of a shortage of parts from Asia.
Employers say backlogs of cargo at over two dozen ports from Southern California to Seattle are because of a worker slowdown. The workers’ union, meanwhile, says there are issues with the supply chain.
The White House has stepped in to help resolve the dispute, which has disrupted billions of dollars in trade. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez is scheduled to talk to shipping businesses and labor union officials on Tuesday.
