Abdul Rahman Kabiri, governer of the central Panjshir province, told ABC News the avalanches were caused by heavy snowfall in the area and destroyed around 100 homes.

As a result of the avalanches, 51 people are missing so far and 15 others are reported trapped on a mountain that needs emergency evacuation, according to Kabiri.
