The university announced Wednesday that it is self-imposing a post season ban for the men’s basketball team in relation to an NCAA investigation.

The NCAA is looking into possible academic improprieties during the 2007 season in which Syracuse self-reported a number of potential NCAA rules violations.

”I believe the university is doing the right thing by acknowledging that past mistakes occurred,” head coach Jim Boeheim said in a statement.

The violations are believed to revolve around academic violations that include former players Fab Melo and James Southerland. In 2012, Melo was ruled ineligible days before the NCAA Tournament. During the 2012-2013 season, Southerland missed six games for academic issues.

“Syracuse’s history demonstrates a strong commitment to integrity, responsibility and fairness — values I have personally observed in practice many times since becoming chancellor last year,” Chancellor Kent Syverud said in a press release.

The NCAA could approve the self-imposed ban or levy more severe punishments against the university.
