Israel is strongly denying allegations it spied on confidential nuclear talks between Iran and the United States in order to build a case against a deal.

The claims were made in a report by the Wall Street Journal, which says the White House uncovered Israel allegedly trying to share top secret details about the talks with U.S. lawmakers.

A senior official in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office told ABC News’ Jordana Miller the allegations were “utterly false.”

The United States, along with other Western nations, is negotiating with Iran over an agreement to curtail its nuclear program in exchange for loosening sanctions.

Many Republicans on Capitol Hill are opposed to a nuclear deal. They accuse Iran of seeking to build a nuclear bomb — something Iran denies.

Tehran insists it has a right to pursue peaceful nuclear power.
