Hillary Clinton’s ‘Two Phones’ Defense Linked to State Department Protocols
Published at(WASHINGTON) — Much ado was made this week over comments made by Hillary Clinton at a press conference regarding the email controversy that has swirled around her over the last few weeks.
“Looking back, it would’ve been better for me to use two separate phones and two email accounts,” Clinton told reporters on Tuesday. Many wondered why the former Secretary of State couldn’t simply have both her personal and government email address synced to one phone.
State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said at a Thursday press briefing that that wasn’t an option for Clinton.
“Prior to early 2014 and the release of the new generation of BlackBerry devices, the security protocols that State deployed did not permit automated access,” Psaki explained. “So, I think, you know, some of you may have devices today or capable today of having a personal and a work email on the same device…that wasn’t permitted at the time.”
Psaki noted that “things have updated post-2014.”
It was also revealed at the briefing that Clinton was not issued a State Department BlackBerry. Psaki also clarified that “no one is required to be issued a State Department BlackBerry.”
