According to ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun, the deal is worth $42 million.

The 31-year-old Boychuk joined the Islanders in October when the Boston Bruins traded him for two second-round picks in 2015 and 2016 and a conditional third-round pick in 2016.

The 6-foot-2, 225 pound Boychuk has excelled this season, scoring seven goals and dishing out 25 assists while recording a plus-17 rating, helping the team challenge for the Metropolitan Division crown.

“Ever since I came to the Islanders, the organization has been incredible to both myself and my family,” Boychuk told the team’s website. “I am proud to be an Islander and look forward to competing every night in front of such a passionate fan base for many years to come.”

Boychuk isn’t the only defenseman the Islanders have locked up this year: in February, they signed 23-year-old Nick Leddy to a seven-year, $38 million contract extension.
