Latest Biden Gaffe Is St. Patrick’s Day ‘Orange’ Joke
Published at(WASHINGTON) — Vice President Joe Biden slipped up on Tuesday while meeting with Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny for St. Patrick’s Day.
“If you are wearing orange, you aren’t welcome,” Biden said in front of the international press. BBC News reports that the Vice President later said he was “only joking.”
The comment was called a “slur” by Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party’s William McCrea. “Whether they were intended as a joke or not,” he said in a statement, “the comments are a slur on those who would be known as ‘orange’ i.e. Protestants.'” McCrea points out that the term “is much wider than anyone who is a member of the Orange Order. It has traditionally been used to define people from the Protestant faith.”
“When Northern Ireland is making such an effort to make St. Patrick’s Day an inclusive celebration, Joe Biden’s comments were disgraceful and careless,” he declared.
