“The idea of having a celebration that can’t be fully shared among all the people in my life and all the people that we love just doesn’t really feel like a celebration at all,” the Girls star said on Monday’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“So until that’s something that everyone can join into with no sense of being left out on any level, politically, emotionally, it’s just not something that we’re gonna do,” she continued.

Ellen DeGeneres, who is married to actress Portia de Rossi, chimed in, “We’re on our way there.”

This isn’t the first time Dunham and Antonoff have said they’re holding off on tying the knot until same-sex marriage is legal throughout the country. The musician and New Jersey native previously told ABC’s Nightline, “To me, it seems odd to get married especially when someone else can’t and I always believed, especially in my state, that it should be a country thing.”

Dunham will guest star later this month on ABC’s Scandal, a show that has also featured de Rossi.
