So she pretends she’s in her 20s to score a job in the publishing industry after a dozen failed job interviews.

Debi Mazar stars as Maggie, the lesbian best friend of Liza, who suggests she “re-think things,” Mazar tells ABC Radio, especially after a much younger man mistakes Liza for a woman in her 20s at a Brooklyn bar.

Hilary Duff stars as junior editor Kelsey Peters. She describes the series as “kind of like Devil Wears Prada meets Sex and the City.” The actress also described her character. “I play this young girl, who’s kind of an animal in the work space where she’s gotten very high up quickly and she’s pretty aggressive, but her dating life is a hot mess,” she tells ABC Radio.

Initially, Duff didn’t want the role. “My agent calls me and she’s like, ‘[Creator] Darren Star sent this amazing script and this part will be really great for you and he wants to meet you and talk to you.’ And I’m like, ‘Nope! No, no, no! I don’t want to do it. I cannot move to New York right now.’ There was just so much going on in my life with a new baby and everything else,” she explains.

Eventually after a phone call, Duff agreed, telling Star, “‘OK! I’m gonna be there.'”

Mazar, however, jumped at her role. “I’m 50 playing 40. So I’m loving it,” she says. “I can tell you how blessed I felt when I got the part because I was older and I got to play younger and it’s just so nice. I usually age up. I’m like, ‘I’ll play the grandmother. I’ve got no problem with that.'”

Both actresses signed onto the series not only because of the script, but because of the opportunity to work with Star, who also created Sex and the City.

“It’s Darren Star so it has his mark on the show for sure,” says Duff.

“Darren Star loves women as you can see from all of his shows. He’s very specific. It’s like doing theater. He knows what he wants. He knows where he wants the comma [and] the period,” Mazar adds. “He’s a joy to work for just because he really celebrates women and their relationships.”

Duff says “the fashion is great” on the series, especially since Star reunited with Sex and the City costume designer Patricia Field to create the looks. Mazar agrees, telling ABC Radio that Star told her he wanted her character to “be a lesbian and still be fierce, and sexy, and wear that lipstick and keep those heels on.”

Younger, which also stars Miriam Shor and Nico Tortorella, premieres with back-to-back episodes on TV Land Tuesday at 10 p.m. Eastern time.
