The 27-year-old Castillo, who the Red Sox signed to a six-year, $72.5 million deal last August, lost out on the right field job to Shane Victorino. The 25-year-old Bradley Jr., who many believe could win a Gold Glove someday, lost the center field job to Mookie Betts.

“Those were tough conversations, yeah, when you have guys that are good players who you believe in and making decisions to start the year the way we’re starting, those were tough decisions and tough conversations,” Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said. “But it’s a good thing for us to have that kind of depth and that kind of talent. We know over the course of the season, more than likely we’re going to need all those guys.”

Castillo played in 10 games for Boston last season hitting .333 with two home runs, six RBIs, and three stolen bases.

Bradley Jr. wasn’t as successful with the big club, hitting .198 with one home run, 30 RBIs, and eight stolen bases in 127 games last season.
