Royals’ Herrera Suspended Five Games, Ventura Fined
Published at(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) — Royals pitcher Kelvin Herrera was suspended five games and fined for targeting Athletics third baseman Brett Lawrie.
Fellow Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura was also fined for the same after a weekend filled of fireworks in Kansas City between both clubs.
“Nobody likes going through what we went through this weekend, nobody,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “Nobody likes it, but it happens.”
Ventura was ejected after hitting Lawrie during Saturday’s game. Herrera was ejected after throwing behind Lawrie on Sunday and then pointed at his head as he walked towards the dugout.
Both actions came after Lawrie’s hard slide into Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar during Friday night’s game.
Still, Herrera defended his actions. “I don’t mean to hurt anybody,” he said. “Just trying to throw inside, but a bad grip on that fastball. It started raining pretty good. And they just tossed me out.”
