“It’s a difficult day, a challenging day and a tough day for myself,” Sandberg said Friday afternoon. “It was not an easy decision. In a lot of ways I’m old-school and I’m very, very much dissatisfied with the record and am not pleased at all by that.”

Pete Mackanin has accepted the role as interim manager, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said Friday.

Sandberg had been in the position since being named the interim manager late in the 2013 season.

The Phillies finished last in the National League East in 2014 with a record of 73-89. The team is now also in last place this season at 26-48.

Pete Mackanin, the team’s third-base coach, has been named interim manager.
