NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell decided to uphold Brady’s four-game suspension, in large part, because investigators found he instructed his assistant to destroy his cellphone. It was the phone Brady used around the time of the AFC championship game, when the footballs he snapped were improperly inflated.

“The commissioner found that Brady’s deliberate destruction of potentially relevant evidence went beyond a mere failure to cooperate in the investigation and supported a finding that he had sought to hide evidence of his own participation in the underlying scheme to alter the footballs,” read a statement from the NFL on Tuesday.

The NFL said Brady arranged for the phone’s destruction even though he knew investigators wanted to see text messages he exchanged with locker room staff.
