The New York Post‘s Page Six claims that the Oscar nominee’s role as Lucious Lyon on the network’s hit hip-hop drama Empire will be scaled back. When the debut season ended, Howard’s character found himself behind bars.

“What they are doing is two-fold,” a source said. “They have him locked up so you won’t be seeing him in as many scenes. But they are bringing in so many, and I mean so many, guest stars and cameos that the average viewer won’t realize it because there is so much going on.”

Howard recently wrapped up legal proceedings that got his 2012 divorce agreement for his second wife, Michelle Ghent, reversed after a judge ruled he signed the paperwork under duress as Ghent tried to blackmail Howard by threatening to release humiliating videos of the actor. The court case also revealed he divorced his third wife, Miranda Cristine Pak, just last month. Howard was also married to Lori McCommas from 1989 until 2007.

The source added that Taraji P. Henson, the show’s breakout star playing the character Cookie Lyon, will be pushed to the forefront. “She’s going to start dropping off from the flashback scenes and then they’re going to have her guns blazing,” the source added.

Empire returns September 23. Guest stars this season will include Mariah Carey, Kelly Rowland, Chris Rock, Alicia Keys and Lenny Kravitz.
