SUGAR CITY — Two juniors at Sugar-Salem High School created first-aid kits to help officers at the Madison County Sheriff’s Office respond more efficiently to emergencies.

Holly Brokens and Russell Blaser raised $150 by selling concession snacks to create 14 kits for Madison’s patrol cars. They presented the completed kits on Tuesday, Jan. 20, as members of the Sugar-Salem chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).

“The officers told the students that they didn’t have (complete) first-aid kits in their cars, so if they were the first responders they had to wait for paramedics to arrive,” FCCLA adviser Cathy Nelson said. “They wanted basic kits for their cars so they could help out a bit more at the scenes.”

Sheriff’s officials said there are first-aid kits in the cars, but this bolsters the first-aid materials in the patrol vehicles.

“This will get everyone on the same page as to who has what and standardize it all,” Cpt. Cameron Stanford said.

The two students created the kits as part of a FCCLA competition designed to test leadership and technical skills in the field of family and consumer sciences.

Brokens and Blaser were required to create the kits, present them to deputies and then create a presentation for judges in a district-wide competition that will be held at the end of the month. If they win they have a chance to move to the state and then national competition.

The sheriff’s office expressed its gratitude to the students on Facebook Tuesday.

“This great donation will help standardize the first-aid kits in the different patrol cars. Thank you so much,” the office posted.
