HOLLADAY, Utah — Officer Doug Barney of the Unified Police Department died after he was shot in the head by a suspect as Barney responded to a traffic accident Sunday morning, KSTU Fox 13 Utah reports.

Another officer, Jon Richey, was struck three times by the same suspect and is in stable condition and, according to KSTU, the suspect was shot and killed in the exchange of gunfire.

KUTV reports police responded to the scene of a car crash just before 10 a.m. When police arrived, one male and one female suspect ran from police officers, who then pursued them on foot.

Police tell KUTV the male suspect, identified as Corey Lee Henderson, shot officer Barney in the head during the chase.

Barney, a father of three, was an 18 year veteran of the UPD force.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert issued the following statement expressing his condolences following the shooting:

“Today a husband and father left his wife and three children, put on a badge, and promised to return home soon. On behalf of Utah residents from across the state, our hearts are broken for the family of Officer Doug Barney who gave the ultimate sacrifice today while in the line of duty. Jeanette and I also extend our prayers to Officer Jon Richey and his family as he undergoes the recovery process”

“Every day, we send our men and women in uniform into harm’s way so that we may live in peace and safety. On a day like today, we are reminded that we will never be able to thank them and their families enough for the sacrifices they have made.”
