BYU-Idaho sees largest winter semester enrollment ever

REXBURG — Enrollment at Brigham Young University-Idaho is up across the board, and is at an all-time high for winter semester.

The university’s total campus enrollment for winter semester rose from 16,738 students in 2015 to 17,714 this year — an increase of 5.8 percent. BYU-Idaho uses a three-track semester system with tracks being available in winter, spring and fall. Spring semester usually sees the lowest enrollment, with fall and winter being about the same.

“This is definitely manageable growth,” BYU-Idaho spokesman Brett Crandall told EastIdahoNews.com. “We are ready and able to accommodate more growth in the future.”

Enrollment in BYU-Idaho’s online courses and degree programs also rose 24 percent for the semester — from 17,979 to 22,302 students, according to a news release. Crandall said the school encourages students to attend online classes in their off track to acquire degrees from the university faster. The university’s online enrollment also includes it’s Pathway program, a low cost program designed to help students succeed and transition into college.

“Not everyone can come to campus, but BYU-I can still provide a higher education to people online,” Crandall said.

BYU-Idaho also released statistics regarding men to women ratios and how many students are married. The report shows during winter semester 51 percent of students were male and 49 percent were female. Married students make up 25 percent of the population.

The university’s winter semester began Jan. 6 and will conclude on April 8. For information on the school visit www.byui.edu.
