Police: Man stabbed pregnant girlfriend, called unborn child ‘product of Satan’

CAMBY, Ind. — A Morgan County man is behind bars, accused of attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend in the abdomen, calling their unborn child a “product of Satan.”

FOX59 reports officers from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department arrested 23-year-old Garret Carpenter Monday, after being called to a trailer in Camby around 5 p.m.

In the 911 call, released to FOX59, the grandmother of the victim can be heard, along with a chaotic scene.

“He got her in several places. He just started stabbing,” she says to the 911 operator.

In court paperwork, Carpenter’s girlfriend, who is eight months pregnant with their child, said he had been using methamphetamine and heroin in the days leading up to the attack.

She told detectives he “was acting very bizarre and very strange” and that he “asked for a hug and kiss,” then “grabbed a machete from inside the bedroom and began attempting to stab her in the abdomen.”

It turned out he was holding the machete backwards and trying to stab her with the handle, which she was able to get away from him. He then started going after her with a Bible in one hand and a box cutter in the other, according to the paperwork.

The victim told detectives Carpenter was saying “this baby was evil and was a mistake.”

Near the end of the 911 call, you can hear the victim’s grandmother ask the operator, “Please will you hurry up? We’re all scared.”

Officers arrived and arrested Carpenter without incident. The victim is okay and it is still unclear why the attack happened.

“She spoke as though that was out of character for him. … I think he made mention to one of the detectives that he didn’t mean to hurt her,” Captain Brent Worth, with the Sheriff’s Department, said.

Carpenter faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, criminal confinement, domestic battery, and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. He was ordered held on $100,000 bail.
