City Council Approves Pocatello Zoo Name Change

The following is a news release from the city of Pocatello.

POCATELLO — The Pocatello City Council has put its stamp of approval on a new name for the Pocatello Zoo.

The zoo will be known as “Zoo Idaho” starting with the 2016 season. The proposal for a new name was brought before the Council at the February study session and Thursday’s resolution and vote formalize the change in moniker.

“The name Pocatello Zoo has reflected the tremendous amount of support we’ve found throughout the community and we are thankful for the continued support,” said John Banks, Parks and Recreation Department Director. “Looking to the future, Zoo Idaho reflects what the zoo has become over the years, a zoo that is an unparalleled ambassador for the Gem State’s native wildlife.”

With the new name, officials plan to attract the attention of the more than 1 million people who make the trip to Yellowstone National Park each year. They also believe the new name will help increase the zoo’s profile online.

“A portion of the marketing with Zoo Idaho will focus specifically on bringing in travelers to Pocatello and when tourists make a stop in our city, our economy benefits,” explains Zoo Superintendent Peter Pruett. “We know you can see a few of these animals in Yellowstone or the wild if you’re lucky and even then it’s usually at some great distance. At Zoo Idaho, you can get within feet or, in the case of our grizzly bears, even inches of these amazing creatures.”

Officials estimate the rebranding effort will cost less than $5,000.

Currently, the zoo is in the process of revamping its entrance along South 2nd Avenue. The overhauled entrance will feature new pathways and landscaping with native vegetation, and will culminate with a new building to house admissions, concessions, restrooms, and a gift shop. Landscaping and the other associated site work are scheduled to be completed by summer 2016. Completion of the new entrance building is to be determined.

The opening day for Zoo Idaho is scheduled for April 1. For more information on the zoo, visit zoo.pocatello.us.
