Pocatello Animal Services Reminds Residents of Leash Law

The following is a news release from the city of Pocatello.

POCATELLO — As spring and the warmer weather continue to take hold in Pocatello, more and more residents will be heading outdoors with their dogs. The City’s Animal Services Department would like to remind residents about the need to keep your furry friends on a leash.

Under Pocatello City Code Chapter 6.04, all dogs are required to be on a leash no longer than 10 feet long and the person with the dog or dogs must have physical control of the leash.

“It’s all about safety with leashes, not only for other people but the dog as well,” said Richard Stewart, Animal Services Director. “By keeping your dog on a leash, you protect your fellow residents but you also keep your dog from getting into a potentially dangerous situation. Even a well-intentioned and loving dog could cause harm to themselves or someone else when running or walking loose.”

There are locations around the city that provide exceptions to the leash law. They are Bartz Field on the Idaho State University campus, Bannock Bark Park in Old Town, and the new Katie’s Dog Park across from the animal shelter. At these places, dogs are allowed to go free as long as they are under the supervision and control of their owner or custodian.

“These places are great for dogs that love to run and exercise,” Stewart said. “Plus, they also get to socialize with other dogs and that helps create a more well-rounded animal.”

On the other side, the City does have places where dogs are not allowed. They are:

Alameda Park: Both baseball fields

Halliwell Park: Bill Derham Baseball Field

Hawthorne Park: Both baseball fields; both soccer fields; both Wilcox soccer fields

Indian Hills School: All soccer fields

Mountain View Cemetery

NOP Park: Little League Baseball Complex; Brown Field; Watkins Softball Complex; Gate City soccer fields

OK Ward Park: Simplot Softball Complex; green area during special events/tournaments

Optimist and Tydeman Park: Both baseball/softball fields

Rainey Park: Softball field

Restlawn Cemetery

Ross Park: All three (3) baseball fields, Upper, and zoo side
