School District 93 chooses a school contractor

IDAHO FALLS – For the second time, Bonneville Joint School District 93 has chosen a contractor to build its new high school.

Earlier this month, the district chose Victor-based Headwaters Construction.

Back in February, the school district chose Hughes Construction from Utah to complete the job, but was forced to restart the process after discovering that Hughes did not possess the necessary licenses to complete the project.

“We used the same process as last time to pick a new construction company,” said Brian McBride, District 93 trustee. “We had different members on the committee this time though, including myself.”

The committee began accepting proposals in March for the job and Headwaters again submitted a bid. Headwaters came in second the previous time to Hughes and also had problems with licenses.

This time Headwaters partnered with Nevada-based construction company CORE to beat out five other construction companies to win the bid. Idaho Falls based Bateman-Hall Inc. came in second, and Hughes came in third.

“Headwaters had the skills necessary, and by bring on CORE it gave them the advantage,” McBride said.

Both Headwaters and CORE have the necessary licenses now and are approved to complete the project. CORE will have a more on-site supervisory role while Headwaters will handle the actual construction of the school.

McBride said CORE has built more than 50 schools and together with Headwaters will allow the district to achieve its specific needs. Headwaters has previously worked with the district in building the Summit Hills and Mountain Valley elementary schools.

Headwaters and CORE will now begin meeting with the architects, Hummel Architects and Alderson Karst & Mitro, and the board to design the school.

“We are still on schedule,” McBride said. “We hope to break ground in June or July.”

The school is funded by $63.5 million in bonds and is expected to open in November to avoid split sessions.
