Two arrested for allegedly stealing items from over 20 storage units

The following is a news release from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.

REXBURG — On March 25, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office started receiving calls from owners of storage units north of Rexburg about locks to their storage units being cut off and items missing.

Over the next week, several more reports were made by victims about more cut locks and items missing.

Later in the week while on patrol, a Madison County Deputy found other storage units burglarized, as well a vehicle in the area of the storage units. The male driver was identified as Jacob C. Hartill.

Hartill was arreseted for having a suspended license, meth and drug paraphernalia and possession of burglary tools.

More information was gathered by Madison County Detectives and second suspect was placed under surveillance and a subsequent arrest warrant was issued for Scott Thomas.

On April 6, a search warrant was executed on a storage unit in Idaho Falls and items from the storage units in Madison County were found along with items from other burglaries in Idaho Falls and Jefferson County. Reports of over 20 storage units have been filed, with cases still under investigation. A large amount of property was found and was taken into evidence.

Jacob C. Hartill, 27, from Idaho Falls was booked on drug charges as well as burglary charges and has a current bond of $35,000. He is being held in the Madison County jail.

Scott M. Thomas, 36, from Idaho Falls was booked on burglary and theft charges with a current bond of $40,000. He is also being held in the Madison County jail.
