IDAHO FALLS — A local company’s ice cream selection just got a little bit sweeter with the introduction of its new line.

Farr Candy Co. in Idaho Falls recently began production and distribution of 12 new premium ice cream flavors.

“We came up with this idea of creating a better ice cream and we wanted to have the best ice cream that people could buy on the shelf,” General Manager Bill Call said.

Farr Candy Co. owner Kevin Call said names and flavors were inspired by local themes. Premium cartons like Huckleberry Cheesecake, Yellowstone Mud Slide, and Death by Chocolate are treats with unique names locals can relate to.

“We just thought it would be neat to have something that would represent us a little bit more. We have two different huckleberry flavors,” Kevin said. “Those berries come from our area.”

One flavor that isn’t found on the mainland is Hawaiian Vanilla Bean, and it is one of Farr’s most unique flavors.

“They grow vanilla beans on the big island of Hawaii and so we buy the vanilla. We’re one of two places in the United States that has Hawaiian vanilla ice cream,” Kevin said.

Bill said the premium flavors stand apart from the original because of the amount of flavoring and richness in each carton.

“Our traditional flavors, they’re kind of just a mainstay ice cream,” Bill said. “The premium ice cream is just loaded with– we call it butter fat, which is cream. It’s what makes it very creamy and smooth, it’s what gives it a good texture.”

Kevin said Wild Huckleberry and Huckleberry Cheesecake have particularly been in high demand.

“The cookie dough brownie has (also) really taken off and that’s been really popular,” Kevin said.

The new flavors come in 56-ounce containers and can be found many local stores.

“We feel like people (want) a really good sweet indulgence,” Bill said.

He said they are happy to primarily serve customers throughout the region and have been doing so for over 100 years. This month Farr Candy Co. celebrates its 105th anniversary.

“Happiness is a bowl of ice cream. I don’t think you see many people with a frown on their face when they’re eating ice cream,” Bill said.
