The following is a news release from Jefferson County.

RIGBY — Winners of Jefferson County Lake’s DIY Island Contest have been selected.

Deon Fisher’s Slide Mountain Island will provide the template for improvements at Jefferson County Lake. Her design, chosen by popular vote at the July 2 celebration, features a series of slides and other structures “for all ages.”

“I really wanted something that people of all ages could enjoy,” Fisher said. “There are things here for adults, teens, and young children.”

Laurie Martinez submitted the second-place design with her Dance Pavilion, a gazebo that could be used for concerts, dancing, or other entertainment. Island Getaway, created by Samantha Martinez, placed third. It features activity zones, including picnic areas, beach, a walk path, water slide and snack shack.

“We anticipate that elements of each of these designs will be incorporated into the final plan,” said Rebecca Squires, Parks and Recreation Director at Jefferson County. “We will take into consideration safety, cost, feasibility, and access for the greatest number of users.”

There were 26 entries in the DIY Island Contest. Designs ranged from splash parks to educational exhibits to camping and picnicking areas. Creators of the top three designs received gift cards.

Engineering and budgeting for the island renovation will begin immediately. Construction should begin next year.
