IDAHO FALLS — A 17-year-old girl remains hospitalized and sedated over a week after she crashed on an ATV.

The teen was injured after flipping the four-wheeleer on Tuesday, August 9 while driving near the corner of Canal Avenue and Highland Drive around 9 p.m.

Friends who witnessed the accident say she flipped off the ATV after appearing to mistake the throttle for the brake.

Idaho Falls Police say the teen was not wearing a helmet.

Family members tell EastIdahoNews.com that she has a traumatic brain injury and is currently in a medically induced coma.

Doctors have been trying to get the teen to breath on her own without the assistance of a ventilator but have not been successful.

An Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center spokeswoman confirms the teen is currently being treated in the intensive care unit and is in serious condition, meaning her vital signs may be unstable and not within normal limits.

A fund has been set up to help the family cover medical expenses.
