Ravens Cornerback Jimmy Smith Out for the Rest of the Season

Ravens Cornerback Jimmy Smith Out for the Rest of the Season Scott Boehem/Getty Images(OWNINGS MILLS, Md.) -- The Baltimore Ravens were hoping to eventually get cornerback Jimmy Smith back onto the field this season, but that won't happen after he underwent foot surgery on Thursday. Smith sprained his left foot back on Oct. 26 in the opening drive of the team's game against the Cincinnati Bengals. "The plan for Jimmy was to do more testing once the swelling subsided in his foot and that was done this morning," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said in a statement. "With this exam this morning, the doctors decided that he needed surgery and repaired the injury. That means Jimmy is finished for the season but will recover for our offseason program." This is a tough blow for a Ravens defense that was already struggling to stop the pass this season. Smith is considered the team's best defensive back. The team is now down to just three healthy cornerbacks. The 26-year-old Smith was the 27th overall pick by the Ravens back in 2011. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Roethlisberger Throws 6 TD’s Again, Steelers Rout Ravens

Roethlisberger Throws 6 TD’s Again, Steelers Rout Ravens Justin K. Aller/Getty Images(PITTSBURGH) -- For the second straight week, Ben Roethlisberger threw six touchdowns as the Pittsburgh Steelers beat Baltimore 43-23 on Sunday night. Roethlisberger's performance helped set an NFL record for combined touchdown passes in consecutive games, with 12. "I don't think any of us are surprised by anything he does," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "We have been looking at it for some time." Big Ben's night began in the second quarter with a five-yard scoring pass to Le'Veon Bell that tied the game at 7-7. Two minutes later, Roethlisberger connected with Martavis Bryant to take the lead before finding Markus Wheaton for a 47-yard strike to give the Steelers (6-3) a 22-17 halftime lead. Baltimore (5-4) struggled to keep their composure, committing 10 penalties, while the offense could not catch up to the Steelers. Joe Flacco was sacked four times and intercepted once but did throw two touchdowns for 303 yards.  Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh quarterback continued his historic stretch with three more touchdown's in the second half, including a second pass to Bryant. His sixth came on a fourth-and-2 play with under two minutes remaining as he connected with Matt Spaeth to set the record. The Steelers also celebrated one of their greatest ever, retiring former defensive lineman Joe Greene's number 75 at halftime. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Ravens Cornerback Jimmy Smith to Miss a Few Weeks

Ravens Cornerback Jimmy Smith to Miss a Few Weeks Scott Boehm/Getty Images(OWINGS MILLS, Md.) -- While getting ready for a pivotal game against their NFC North rival Pittsburgh Steelers, the Baltimore Ravens will have to do so without top cornerback Jimmy Smith as he'll miss the next few weeks with a sprained left foot. Smith suffered the injury on the opening drive of the team's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. "He'll be back soon," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said Monday. Aside from being one of the top defensive backs on the team, Smith is emerging as one of the top young cornerbacks in the NFL. He leads the Ravens with eight passes defended. The Ravens are thin when it comes to cornerbacks now -- Ladarius Webb, Dominique Franks, Chykie Brown are the only healthy corners the team has. At 5-3, the Ravens and Steelers are tied for second in their division, with the Bengals holding a half-game lead over both teams at 4-2-1. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Joe Flacco: Still Have to Put the Work In

Joe Flacco: Still Have to Put the Work In Rob Carr/Getty Images(BALTIMORE) -- The Baltimore Ravens will have the spotlight to themselves after the Orioles were knocked out of the ALCS by the Royals on Wednesday. Fresh off throwing five touchdown passes, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco is making sure his team does everything they can to prepare the right way after blowing out the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sunday. Flacco said the biggest challenge the team will face after an easy win is "coming in here and reminding yourself and everybody to put the work in. I think that comes naturally for us, it's something we're good at doing, once you get out there on Sunday everything takes care of itself." Concerning Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, Flacco said: "We were in the same class. As long as you're still talking about us, we're somewhat relevant, so I guess that's a good thing.  It's nice to see that we are still relevant." Ravens head coach John Harbaugh knows the Falcons will be hungry for a win after losing three in a row. "Atlanta's good. They're going to be on turf, so they're going to be fast," Harbaugh said. "They've got big, fast receivers. They've got fast running backs, and they got a quarterback that drives the whole thing. That's an explosive football team, and we've got to be ready for them." The Ravens will host the Atlanta Falcons, who are 0-3 on the road this season. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Flacco Feasts on Bucs Secondary

Flacco Feasts on Bucs Secondary Rob Carr/Getty Images(TAMPA BAY, FL) -- Joe Flacco tossed five touchdowns against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the Baltimore Ravens went on to win 48-17. Flacco threw four of his touchdowns in the first quarter, putting up a lead that would prove too much for the Bucs to remain competitive.  "It was very enjoyable. You don't get those too often in this league. ... It was pretty crazy," Flacco said. "It happened so quickly. It was such an awkward situation, but it was definitely fun for us." On the receiving end of those passes were Torrey Smith, who caught the first two, Kamar Aiken, Michael Campanaro and Steve Smith. Baltimore returns home to host the Atlanta Falcons next week.   Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Ravens Pummel Steelers Amidst Rice Distraction

Ravens Pummel Steelers Amidst Rice Distraction Doug Pensinger/Getty Images(BALTIMORE) -- If the Baltimore Ravens were distracted by the controversy surrounding former teammate Ray Rice, they didn't show it Thursday night. Joe Flacco threw for two touchdowns and Justin Tucker made all four of his field goal attempts as the Ravens pummeled the Pittsburgh Steelers 26-6. Raven players fielded questions all week about former teammate Ray Rice, who was released by the team and then indefinitely suspended by the NFL for domestic violence. A video was released by TMZ Sports Monday showed Rice knocking out his then-fiancee (now wife) Janay Palmer during a dispute. The Ravens showed quickly that they were ready to play Thursday when Flacco found tight end Owen Daniels for a two yard touchdown pass on their first drive of the game. The next time the Ravens received the ball, they drove it 65 yards before Justin Tucker hit a 30 yard field goal. Flacco finished the game completing 21-of-29 passes for 166 yards. Ben Roethlisberger was sacked twice and completed 22-of-37 passes for 217 yards and an interception for Pittsburgh (1-1) in the loss.   Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Ravens Terminate Ray Rice’s Contract, NFL Suspends Rice Indefinitely

Ravens Terminate Ray Rice’s Contract, NFL Suspends Rice Indefinitely Rob Carr/Getty Images(BALTIMORE) -- The Baltimore Ravens terminated the contract of running back Ray Rice on Monday in wake of TMZ Sports releasing a new video of him punching his then-fiancee in the face in an elevator at a hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell also announced Monday that Rice is suspended indefinitely in the wake of the newly released video. Rice hit Janay Palmer with a left fist to the head. Palmer fell on the hand rail and landed on the floor before Rice is shown dragging her seemingly unconscious body out into the lobby. On July 25, Rice was suspended by the NFL for two games and fined more than $500,000. The move was highly criticized and led to Goodell instituting a six-game suspension for any first offenders to a domestic abuse case and a lifetime ban for a second offense. "We requested from law enforcement any and all information about the incident, including the video from inside the elevator," the NFL released in a statement on Monday regarding the new video.  "That video was not made available to us and no one in our office has seen it until today." Rice had three years and $10 million remaining on his contract. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Brandon Meriweather Suspended Two Games

Brandon Meriweather Suspended Two Games NFL Shield(ASHBURN, Va.) -- Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather was suspended for the first two games of the season by the NFL on Monday. The punishment comes after another helmet-to-helmet hit from Meriweather on Baltimore's Torrey Smith over the weekend. "Meriweather delivered a forceful blow to the head and neck area of a defenseless receiver with no attempt to wrap up or make a conventional tackle of this player," said NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent in a statement. Meriweather said after the game on Saturday that he did not believe there was anything wrong with the hit on Smith. "I'm trying to do what the NFL asked me after going through the offseason, and working on the things I need to work on, and the first chance I get, it seems like I failed," he said. Meriweather has been fined five different times by the league over the course of his career, including a $42,000 fine for a hit on Packers running back Eddie Lacy in 2013. The safety was also suspended two games last year, but had it reduced to one game following an appeal. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Ray Rice Breaks His Silence

Ray Rice Breaks His Silence Rob Carr/Getty Images(OWINGS MILLS, Md.) -- Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice addressed the media Thursday for the first time since his two-game suspension was announced by the NFL. Rice spoke about the suspension and publicly apologized to his wife, Janay, for the first time since his alleged altercation with his then-fiancee in February. "I made the biggest mistake of my life," Rice said. Rice, 27, would not get into what happened in the Atlantic City, New Jersey, elevator, but he also apologized to all women affected by domestic violence and expressed his intentions to become an "ambassador" against it. "That night I replay over and over in my head. That's not me. My actions were inexcusable. That's something I have to live with the rest of my life," he explained. "The pain I'm talking about living with is waking up every day, and my daughter is two years old now, and I have a little girl, who's very smart, very intelligent, and one day she's going to know the power of Google, and me having to explain that to her, what happened that night." Rice was joined at the press conference by nearly 30 of his Baltimore Ravens teammates.  He will miss the team's Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals and their Sept. 11 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Cowboys Acquire Linebacker Rolando McClain Via Trade

Cowboys Acquire Linebacker Rolando McClain Via Trade NFL via Getty Images(IRVING, Texas) -- Dallas Cowboys acquired linebacker Rolando McClain in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday. Dallas sent a 2015 sixth-round pick to Baltimore in return for McClain and Baltimore's 2015 seventh-round pick. McClain was selected out of Alabama with the eighth overall pick by the Raiders in 2010. He eventually was released by the Raiders after multiple arrests and other off-field issues.                                                                 McClain signed with the Ravens in 2013 but retired before playing a game. The NFL reinstated McClain in March 2014 after the linebacker communicated that he wanted to play, but McClain decided to retire again soon after. But again the itch to play came back again, and McClain was officially taken off the reserve/ retired list Tuesday.                                                                                                                                                      The addition of McClain helps the Cowboys replace linebacker Sean Lee, who tore his ACL and is expected to miss the entire 2014 season.                                                                                                                             The 24-year-old McClain has played in 41 NFL games. During that time, he had 175 tackles, 6.5 sacks and 17 passes defended. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio
