Former Manager Don Zimmer Passes Away At 83

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Former major league manager, coach and player Don Zimmer passed away on Wednesday. He was 83.
“Like everyone in Major League Baseball, I am deeply saddened by the loss of my friend Don Zimmer, one of our game’s most universally beloved figures,” MLB commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement.  “A memorable contributor to Baseball for more than 60 years, Don was the kind of person you could only find in the National Pastime.”
Zimmer managed the San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs. In 13 seasons, he compiled a record of 885-858.

Cubs Hire Manny Ramirez as Triple-A Player/Coach

Cubs Hire Manny Ramirez as Triple-A Player/Coach

Mandy Cheng/AFP/Getty Images(SAN DIEGO) — The Chicago Cubs hired Manny Ramirez as a player/coach for their Triple-A team in Iowa.
The 41-year-old Ramirez played 19 major league seasons and is a lifetime .312 hitter with 555 home runs.
“While Manny is not and will not be a fit on the Cubs’ major league roster, we do think at this stage of his life he’s a nice fit as a mentor for some of the young talented hitters we have in the organization,” Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said in a statement released Sunday. “Manny will coach full-time and play part-time in a limited role that does not take at-bats away from our prospects.
“If he shows there is still some magic in his bat, perhaps he will find his way to the major leagues and help another team, but that is not why he is here. We are thrilled that he wants to work with our young hitters and make a difference.”
Despite not having the opportunity to make the Cubs’ big league roster, Ramirez is excited to be with Chicago.
“I’m at the stage of my life and career where I really want to give something back to the game that I love — the game that has meant so much to me and done so much for me and my family,” Ramirez said a release. “I know I am nearing the end of my playing days, but I have a lot of knowledge to pass on to the next generation — both what to do and what not to do.”
