Floyd Inks 1-Year Deal with Indians

Major League Baseball(CLEVELAND) -- The Cleveland Indians signed starting pitcher Gavin Floyd to a one-year contract Tuesday. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the deal is worth $4 million and could earn Floyd another $6 million in incentives. The 31-year-old Floyd made only five starts in 2013 before undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. He made nine starts for Atlanta the following season before suffering a fracture in the same elbow, causing him to miss the rest of the season."His elbow's actually fine," Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said. "We went through an extensive physical...His ligament is strong and intact. The fracture he suffered last year is well healed. We expect him to be fully ready for Spring Training."Before 2013, Floyd was one of the more consistent pitchers in the major leagues. The right-hander pitched five straight seasons of at least 29 starts for the Chicago White Sox.During his 11 big league seasons, Floyd has pitched 1,205 2/3 innings, compiling a 72-72 record with a 4.40 ERA, 948 strike outs, and a 1.33 WHIP.

Indians Reward Manager Terry Francona with Extension

Indians Reward Manager Terry Francona with Extension

Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Since taking over the Cleveland Indians, manager Terry Francona has helped turned the Indians around to a competitive team in the American League Central. That is why the team has agreed on an extension with their skipper.

Francona's new deal will keep him in an Indians uniform through the 2018 season. It also includes club options for the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

In his first season with the Indians back in 2013, Francona guided the Indians to a 92-win season, which was the most wins in a single season since 2007.

That year the Indians also made the playoffs for the first time since 2007, while Francona won the American League Manager of the Year Award.

This past season, the Indians took a slight step back, but still finished 85-77.

In 14 seasons as a Major League manager with the Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox, and Indians, Francona has 1,206 wins, which is the fourth-most among active managers.

Indians’ Jason Kipnis Thinks New Contract Led to Poor Season

Indians’ Jason Kipnis Thinks New Contract Led to Poor Season

BananaStock/ThinkStock(NEW YORK) -- Even by his standards, Cleveland Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis has struggled to follow up his breakout 2013 season despite a new contract. Kipnis thinks his new deal is partially to blame for his struggles.

"I might have taken it the wrong way," Kipnis told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "There’s one of two ways to go about it. There’s 'Hey, I have the security and the money now I can go out and just play the game of baseball.' I took the way, where, 'I’ve got this money, I’ve got to live up to it.'"

"So I might have pressed at the beginning and tried to do too much," he continued. "In hindsight that could have hurt me and played a little part of this season."

Last season, Kipnis made the American League All-Star team after he batted .284 with 17 home runs with 84 RBIs and 30 steals.

The Indians rewarded Kipnis with a six-year contract extension worth $52.5 million.

Kipnis has struggled to live up to the deal this season. Through 119 games, he's hitting .247 with six home runs and 41 RBIs.

The 27-year-old Kipnis is a career .264 hitter.

Derek Jeter Passes Wagner for Sixth on All-Time Hits List

Derek Jeter Passes Wagner for Sixth on All-Time Hits List

Elsa/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Derek Jeter passed the only shortstop remaining on the all-time hits list on Saturday in the bottom of the sixth inning with a base hit off Indians pitcher Corey Kluber.

Jeter is set to retire at the end of the season and Honus Wagner was the last person he could probably reach when the season started.

"Honus Wanger, he is the last one on the list who has played shortstop," Jeter said. "That one hits home a little bit. Anytime you pass guys that have had the careers that they've had, it is kind of overwhelming."

The 40-year-old shortstop collected his 3,431 hit off of Kluber, but the Indians shut out the Yankees, 3-0.

Tris Speaker, who sits at No. 5 on the all-time hits list, has 3,514 hits.

Kluber Dominates in Indians Win

Kluber Dominates in Indians Win

Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images(CLEVELAND) -- Corey Kluber continued an impressive stretch by pitching into the eighth inning of a 7-1 Cleveland Indians win over Cincinnati on Monday. Kluber allowed just one run in 7 1/3 innings, scattering six hits for his fifth straight win.

"Klubes has pitched to the point where, heck yeah, you better play with confidence," said Indians manager Terry Francona. "He's one of the best pitchers in the league."

Cleveland (57-55) provided more than enough offense for Kluber, who has not lost since June 30. The big blow came on a Lonnie Chisenhall three-run home run in the fourth, making it 4-0. Yan Gomes later added a two-run blast of his own in the eighth inning.

Kluber also struck out seven in the victory and walked just two batters. He also upped his scoreless innings streak to 17 before a Brayan Pena RBI double in the eighth ended that run. It was Cleveland's fourth consecutive win.

Behind Corey Kluber’s Shutout, Indians Top Mariners 2-0

Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images(CLEVELAND) -- Now that Justin Masterson is out of town, the Cleveland Indians have found their new staff ace. Cory Kluber held the Seattle Mariners to just three hits in nine innings of work in the team's 2-0 win over the Mariners.

Kluber out-dueled Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, striking out eight batters over nine innings, lowering his ERA to 2.61 on the season.

"Obviously, it's a challenge going up against one of the best pitchers in the game," Kluber said. "We all look forward to challenges, so it's nice to come out on top."

The only offense in the game came in the 5th inning when Indians catcher Yan Gomes hit an RBI double off Herndandez to score Lonnie Chisenhall and Nick Swisher.

In only his second full season as a starting pitcher, Kluber has emerged as one of the best pitchers in the American League. He ranks in the top 10 in the American League in wins, innings, strikeouts, ERA, and WHIP.

Cardinals Acquire SP Justin Masterson from Indians

Cardinals Acquire SP Justin Masterson from Indians

Sarah Glenn/Getty Images(NEW YORK) --  In an attempt to bolster their starting rotation, the St. Louis Cardinals have acquired right-hander Justin Masterson from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for minor league outfielder James Ramsey.

Masterson is 4-6 with a 5.51 ERA this season for Cleveland.  He will be a free agent this winter.  Masterson has struggled with a knee injury recently and was placed on the disabled list July 8.  He has yet to be activated.

The 29-year-old right-hander made the All-Star team last season when he went 14-10 with three shutouts.  He finished his career in Cleveland with a 48-61 record.

Ramsey, 24, was the 23rd overall pick in the 2012 draft out of Florida State.  In 235 minor league games, he's a .266 hitter with a .368 on base percentage.
