Derek Jeter Passes Wagner for Sixth on All-Time Hits List

Derek Jeter Passes Wagner for Sixth on All-Time Hits List

Elsa/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Derek Jeter passed the only shortstop remaining on the all-time hits list on Saturday in the bottom of the sixth inning with a base hit off Indians pitcher Corey Kluber.
Jeter is set to retire at the end of the season and Honus Wagner was the last person he could probably reach when the season started.
“Honus Wanger, he is the last one on the list who has played shortstop,” Jeter said. “That one hits home a little bit. Anytime you pass guys that have had the careers that they’ve had, it is kind of overwhelming.”
The 40-year-old shortstop collected his 3,431 hit off of Kluber, but the Indians shut out the Yankees, 3-0.
Tris Speaker, who sits at No. 5 on the all-time hits list, has 3,514 hits.

Kluber Dominates in Indians Win

Kluber Dominates in Indians Win

Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images(CLEVELAND) — Corey Kluber continued an impressive stretch by pitching into the eighth inning of a 7-1 Cleveland Indians win over Cincinnati on Monday. Kluber allowed just one run in 7 1/3 innings, scattering six hits for his fifth straight win.
“Klubes has pitched to the point where, heck yeah, you better play with confidence,” said Indians manager Terry Francona. “He’s one of the best pitchers in the league.”
Cleveland (57-55) provided more than enough offense for Kluber, who has not lost since June 30. The big blow came on a Lonnie Chisenhall three-run home run in the fourth, making it 4-0. Yan Gomes later added a two-run blast of his own in the eighth inning.
Kluber also struck out seven in the victory and walked just two batters. He also upped his scoreless innings streak to 17 before a Brayan Pena RBI double in the eighth ended that run. It was Cleveland’s fourth consecutive win.

Behind Corey Kluber’s Shutout, Indians Top Mariners 2-0

Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images(CLEVELAND) — Now that Justin Masterson is out of town, the Cleveland Indians have found their new staff ace. Cory Kluber held the Seattle Mariners to just three hits in nine innings of work in the team’s 2-0 win over the Mariners.
Kluber out-dueled Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, striking out eight batters over nine innings, lowering his ERA to 2.61 on the season.
“Obviously, it’s a challenge going up against one of the best pitchers in the game,” Kluber said. “We all look forward to challenges, so it’s nice to come out on top.”
The only offense in the game came in the 5th inning when Indians catcher Yan Gomes hit an RBI double off Herndandez to score Lonnie Chisenhall and Nick Swisher.
In only his second full season as a starting pitcher, Kluber has emerged as one of the best pitchers in the American League. He ranks in the top 10 in the American League in wins, innings, strikeouts, ERA, and WHIP.

Cardinals Acquire SP Justin Masterson from Indians

Cardinals Acquire SP Justin Masterson from Indians

Sarah Glenn/Getty Images(NEW YORK) –  In an attempt to bolster their starting rotation, the St. Louis Cardinals have acquired right-hander Justin Masterson from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for minor league outfielder James Ramsey.
Masterson is 4-6 with a 5.51 ERA this season for Cleveland.  He will be a free agent this winter.  Masterson has struggled with a knee injury recently and was placed on the disabled list July 8.  He has yet to be activated.
The 29-year-old right-hander made the All-Star team last season when he went 14-10 with three shutouts.  He finished his career in Cleveland with a 48-61 record.
Ramsey, 24, was the 23rd overall pick in the 2012 draft out of Florida State.  In 235 minor league games, he’s a .266 hitter with a .368 on base percentage.

Indians Recall Danny Salazar

Indians Recall Danny Salazar

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(MINNEAPOLIS) — Pitching prospect Danny Salazar has been recalled by the Cleveland Indians.
The Indians wasted no time getting Salazar on the mound, giving him the start in Tuesday night’s 8 to 2 win over the Minnesota Twins.
Salazar was sharp, throwing five innings, giving up one run, walking three while striking out six.
The team had high hopes for the 24-year-old this season after he started 10 games last season pitching 52 innings, with a 3.12 ERA, striking out 65 batters while walking only 15. But Salazar wasn’t as sharp and was sent to Triple-A Columbus on May 16 after starting eight games, during which he compiled a 1-4 record, 5.53 ERA, and a 1.62 WHIP.
To make room for Salazar the Indians optioned reliever C.C. Lee to Columbus.

Indians Sweep Detroit in Doubleheader

Indians Sweep Detroit in Doubleheader

Jason Miller/Getty Images(DETROIT) — The Cleveland Indians swept a doubleheader in Detroit on Saturday, closing to within 4 1/2 games of the division leading Tigers. The Indians (50-47) opened the day with a 6-2 win before downing Detroit (53-41) 5-2 in the nightcap.
Game One’s story was the impressive pitching performance of Corey Kluber. The righty pitched into the ninth inning, striking out 10 batters. He came within one out of his second complete game before Bryan Shaw relieved him to finish things out.
The big offensive blow came in the fifth inning with three run-scoring hits to put Cleveland up 3-0. Another run came across in the sixth before the Indians tacked on two more in the ninth.
Game Two was not so easy for the Indians, taking a tied game into the final inning of regulation. Chris Dickerson hit a pair of solo home runs to put Cleveland up 2-1 after six frames before Austin Jackson’s RBI triple in the seventh tied things up.
The Indians then loaded the bases in the top of the ninth against Joe Nathan. Carlos Santana took advantage with a bases clearing double to right-center. Cody Allen finished things off in the bottom half for his 13th save.

Swisher Slams Cleveland Past Angels in Extras

Swisher Slams Cleveland Past Angels in Extras

Joe Robbins/Getty Images(CLEVELAND, Ohio) — Albert Pujols hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the top of the tenth that put Los Angeles ahead 3-1. Nick Swisher answered with a walk-off grand slam in the bottom half of the inning to give Cleveland a 5-3 victory on Thursday afternoon.
“When I first hit it, I said, all right, that’s a double,” said Swisher. “The next thing you know, it went out. I flipped my bat. I was going crazy.”
The two-out hit was Swisher’s only one of the day, striking out each time in his previous three at-bats. It was also the second time that the Indians (37-36) came from behind in the game. With a runner on third in the second, Cleveland starter Justin Masterson delivered a wild pitch that allowed Howie Kendrick to score and give the Angels (38-33) a 1-0 advantage.
Cleveland answered back in the third on a groundout from Michael Bourn in the third, the last run scored in the first nine innings. Both Masterson and Los Angeles starter, C.J. Wilson went seven innings before turning things over to the bullpen.
Pujols’ two-RBI hit came off reliever Scott Atchison with two outs, seemingly giving the Angels the victory. However, Bourn walked to lead off before Jason Kipnis doubled two batters later. After Carlos Santana walked to load the bases, Ernesto Frieri came on to try and finish off the game. Frieri induced a fly out from Daniel Murphy for the second out before Swisher’s slam gave the Indians a 5-3 win.

Kenny Lofton Misses Competition

Kenny Lofton Misses Competition

Rob Carr/ Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Former MLB outfielder Kenny Lofton spent 17 years in the league and still misses the competition after retiring in 2007.
Lofton finished his career with a .299 batting average, 622 stolen bases, and 2,428 hits.
“I love to compete and that’s the tough part,” Lofton told ABC Sports Radio on Friday.  “I’m trying to pick up golf now to try and have some competition with something.”
Lofton played for 12 teams during his 17-year run and made six All-Star teams.
“Coming from a college basketball player to end up playing 17 years in the big leagues, that’s something that I never would have dreamed of,” Lofton said of his biggest accomplishment.
The 47-year-old would jump at the right opportunity to get back into the game he loves in the right coaching situation.
“I would love to,” Lofton said.  “If I have some people who would actually listen, I would want to do something like that.”
“A lot of kids think they know it all and that’s the problem I have,” Lofton continued.  “Coaching and managing would be tough, but as long as you can get some young kids that would listen, I wouldn’t mind doing it.”
