Dale Earnhardt Jr. Completes Pocono Sweep

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Completes Pocono Sweep

Jamie Squire/Getty Images(LONG POND, Pa.) — Dale Earnhardt Jr. survived a multi-car crash on lap 117 and then went ahead on the final restart to take home the checkered flag at Pocono Raceway on Sunday.

Earnhardt Jr. completed the Pocono season sweep with the victory and was followed by a late charging Kevin Harvick.

Earnhardt credited the hard work by his team and crew chief Steve Letarte during the last restart.

“We had a fast car all day,” Earnhardt said. “Steve’s strategy was perfect at the end. I don’t know if anyone knew what was going on there, but it was pretty awesome.”

Earnhardt won his third race of the season, which is the most since he won six times back in 2004.

Denny Hamlin last completed the Pocono sweep back in 2006.

Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer, and Greg Biffle rounded out the top five.

Jimmie Johnson Wins Michigan 400

Chris Graythen/NASCAR via Getty Images(BROOKLYN, Mich.) — Cross another track off the list for Jimmie Johnson.

Johnson took home the checkered flag for the first time at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday and led 39 of the 200 laps.

Johnson has now won the last three out of four Sprint Cup races and has undoubtedly secured a spot in the Chase.

“I wasn’t taking anything for granted on that final trip around,” Johnson said.

“About 200 yards before the finish line, I knew if the car exploded, I’d still slide across the finish line,” Johnson joked.  “That’s finally when I relaxed and let it go.”

It took the six-time Sprint Cup champion 25 times to finally get into Victory Lane at Michigan.

Kevin Harvick, who won the pole, finished in second and was followed by Brad Keselowski.

Paul Menard and Kasey Kahne rounded out the top five.

Kevin Harvick Wins Pole for Michigan 400

Kevin Harvick Wins Pole for Michigan 400

Jeff Zelevansky/NASCAR via Getty Images(BROOKLYN, Mich.) — Kevin Harvick took home the pole for Sunday’s Sprint Cup series race at Michigan.

Harvick’s pole-winning speed of 204.557 mph was the fastest qualifying speed since Bill Elliot in 1987.

“This is one of those racetracks where you’re running fast, but you really can’t put it all in perspective, I guess, until you hit something,” Harvick said. “It’s so wide, it’s so fast and so smooth, but you don’t really get that huge sensation of speed.”

Sprint Cup points leader Jeff Gordon was the second fastest on Friday and was followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr.

“This format has obviously been good for me to kind of, I guess, creep up on it as you go through the sessions,” Harvick said. “A fast car really solves a lot of problems.”

Harvick enjoys racing at Michigan.

“Michigan’s been fast for a long time. How fast is too fast?” Harvick said. “The cars will slow down a tremendous amount when we get them in race trim and you get them in a pack, and it’s going to be quite a bit hotter on Sunday. They’ll slow down. Qualifying speeds are high. It’s just a matter of whose opinion is taken on whether it’s too fast or not.”

Earnhardt Jr. Earns First Win at Pocono

Earnhardt Jr. Earns First Win at Pocono

Jamie Squire/Getty Images(LONG POND, Pa.) — Dale Earnhardt Jr. earned his second win of the season, his first at Pocono Raceway, Sunday when he won the Pocono 400.

Earnhardt passed Brad Keselowski with five laps remaining to secure his first multiple win season since 2004.

Keselowski led the race for 95 laps but had a piece of debris in his grille that caused his engine to run hot. Keselowski tried to clean the debris off the grille with five laps remaining but it allowed Earnhardt to pass him. Keselowksi was never able to regain the lead as he finishes second for a second straight race.

“Running really, really hot and the motor was going to blow up,” Keselowski told The Motor Racing Network. “So I had to do something. I tried to follow the 10 there in the corner and clear the debris off. Just checked up too much. I thought I had a little more room than I did. The team did a heck of a job. I just messed up a little bit there. I had a really good car.”

Kurt Busch finished third followed by Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson.
