Kansas City Tops Baltimore 6-4

Rich Pilling/MLB Photos via Getty Images(BALTIMORE, MD) -- The Kansas City Royals put the Baltimore Orioles behind the eight ball with a 6-4 victory in Camden Yards.

Following the trend of his teammates late inning heroics, Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar broke a 4-4 tie when he hit a double to drive in pinch runner Terrance Gore from second.  Escobar would soon score when Lorenzo Cain singled to left.

With a 6-4 lead, closer Greg Holland once again took to the mound to seal away a victory.

Mike Moustakas continued his playoff tear as he hit another home run, his fourth of the postseason, and as many in the last five games.

Yordano Ventura went 5 2/3 innings for the Royals allowing four earned runs on five hits.  Orioles pitcher Bud Norris was knocked out after only 4 1/3 innings after allowing four earned runs on nine hits.

The Royals now take a 2-0 lead in the ALCS as they head home for game 3 Tuesday. Jeremy Guthrie will take the mound for the Royals in Kansas City, while Wei-Yin Chen gets the nod for the Orioles.

Royals Take Game 1 Over Orioles 8-6

Mike McGinnis/Getty Images(BALTIMORE, MD) -- The Kansas City Royals have struck first, taking game one of the ALCS from the Baltimore Orioles, 8-6.

Powered by tenth inning home runs from Alex Gordon and Mike Moustakas the Royals continued their extra inning success.  The Royals now have four wins this postseason in games that have gone longer than nine innings.

Gordon spoke about the sudden power outburst. "We know we're capable of hitting home runs,"Gordon said, "We didn't do it during the regular season, but it doesn't really matter."

Greg Holland earned the save in the tenth, though not without some drama. After earning the first two outs, Holland gave up a single to Ryan Flaherty and a walk to Jimmy Paredes. Delmon Young smacked a single to center driving in Flaherty making the score 8-6. Holland locked it down with the next batter as he forced Nick Markakis to groundout to second, ending the game.

In game two, Bud Norris will take the hill for the Orioles and Yordano Ventura will get the nod for the Royals.

Royals Sweep Angels, Meet Orioles in ALCS

Royals Sweep Angels, Meet Orioles in ALCS

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(KANSAS CITY) -- In their first playoff appearance since 1985, the Kansas City Royals swept the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, reaching the American League Championship Series (ALCS). The 8-3 margin was the largest in the best-of-five series after Kansas City won two games in Los Angeles in extra innings.

"I've never seen this group of kids so confident on the big stage," said manager Ned Yost. "It's really fun to see their development and watch them come into the postseason and just really take their game to the next level."

The Angels, who earned homefield advantage by having the leagues best regular-season record, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Mike Trout homered off James Shields for his first-ever postseason hit. That lead quickly evaporated in the bottom half of the inning when the Royals' Alex Gordon drove in three runs with a double off C.J. Wilson, chasing the Los Angeles starter.

Kansas City added to the lead in the third inning on Eric Hosmer's second homer of the playoffs, a two-run shot to center. Albert Pujols tried to spark a rally for the Angels with a solo shot of his own, but that was all Los Angeles could muster off Shields.

"Big Game" James went six strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six, while the offense added two runs in the fourth and another in the sixth. Wade Davis gave up a run in the eighth but the bullpen shut down an otherwise punchless Angels offense.

The Royals will now meet the Baltimore Orioles, who swept Detroit earlier in the day, in the best-of-seven ALCS. Game One is Friday night in Baltimore.

Royals Beat Angels in Extras Again, Hold 2-0 Series Lead

Royals Beat Angels in Extras Again, Hold 2-0 Series Lead

Rich Pilling/MLB Photos via Getty Images(ANAHEIM, Calif.) -- For the second consecutive night, the Kansas City Royals used an extra inning home run to beat Los Angeles, 4-1, in the American League Divisional Series (ALDS) on Friday night. Eric Hosmer's two-run homer in the top of eleventh gave the Royals a 3-1 lead, taking a 2-0 series lead over the Angels.

Kansas City became the first time in Major League history to open up a postseason with three consecutive extra-inning wins, after spending 29 years without a playoff berth. They are the sixth team to win a trio of extra-inning games in one playoffs appearance. The previous five have all gone on to win the World Series.

The Royals took an early lead against Matt Shoemaker when Alex Gordon drove in Hosmer with a single in the second. Los Angeles would eventually knot the score in the sixth on an Albert Pujols single, making it a 1-1 game after six innings.

The Angels had a chance to take a lead in the bottom of the eighth. C.J. Cron doubled off reliever Wade Davis and was pinch-ran for by Collin Cowgill. Following Chris Iannetta's fly-out to center, newly inserted Jarrod Dyson threw out Cowgill trying to advance to third.

That helped send the game into extras for the second straight night. Lorenzo Cain stretched out an infield single before Hosmer's go-ahead blast off Kevin Jepsen. Kansas City reliever Greg Holland pitched a scoreless bottom half of the inning, striking out Mike Trout to end the game.

The series now shifts to Kansas City where James Shields will take on C.J. Wilson.

Perez Sends Royals into ALDS with 12th Inning Single

Perez Sends Royals into ALDS with 12th Inning Single

Rich Pilling/MLB Photos via Getty Images(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) -- Salvador Perez's walk-off single with two outs in the 12th sent the Kansas City Royals past the Oakland Athletics 9-8 Tuesday night, in the American League Wild Card game.

After the Athletics took the lead in the top of the 12th on an Alberto Callaspo RBI single, the Royals answered back. Eric Hosmer hit a triple and then scored the tying run on Christian Colon's RBI infield single. Colon then stole second base before scoring the game-winner on Perez's clutch hit.

"This will go down as the craziest game I've ever played," Hosmer said. "This team showed a lot of character. No one believed in us before the game. No one believed in us before the season."

Hosmer is right, the game was pretty crazy. The Royals, who were playing in their first postseason since 1985, were leading 3-2 in the sixth inning when starting pitcher James Shields allowed a hit and then walked a batter. That prompted Kansas City skipper Ned Yost to pull Shields for rookie Yordano Ventura. Ventura then allowed a three-run home run to Brandon Moss, his second homer of the game, to make it 5-3. The A's added two more runs that inning, creating a deficit that appeared the Royals would not overcome. But Kansas City clawed out three runs in the eighth and Norichicka Aoki's sacrifice fly in the ninth sent the game into extra innings.

This is the Athletics seventh-straight loss in a winner-take-all playoff game since 2000.

The Royals now advance to take on the Los Angeles Angels in their best-of-five Division Series. Game 1 is Thursday night in Los Angeles.

Royals Clinch First Postseason Berth Since 1985

Royals Clinch First Postseason Berth Since 1985

Zoonar/Thinkstock(CHICAGO) -- For the first time in 29 years, the Kansas City Royals are heading to the playoffs. Kansas City clinched their first postseason berth since 1985 with a 3-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Friday night, ending the longest playoff drought in any of the four major North American sports.

Jeremy Guthrie (13-11) tossed seven scoreless innings for the Royals (88-72), who scored three times in the first inning. Norichika Aoki tripled, scoring Alcides Escobar, while a pair of RBI singles from Lorenzo Cain and Billy Butler added to the advantage.

It the White Sox (72-88) until the eighth inning before finally scoring, getting an RBI single from Alexei Ramirez. In the bottom of the ninth, Greg Holland retired the side in order, getting Michael Taylor to pop up to secure the win. The last time Kansas City was in the postseason, George Brett led the squad to a World Series title over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Royals are still in contention for the AL Central division crown. The Detroit Tigers sit just one game ahead in the standings with two contests left in the regular season.

Tigers Beat Royals, Earn Tie Atop AL Central

Tigers Beat Royals, Earn Tie Atop AL Central

David Banks/Getty Images(DETROIT) -- Max Scherzer gave up just one run in six and two-thirds innings, helping the Detroit Tigers defeat Kansas City 4-2 on Tuesday night. The victory pulled Detroit (80-65) within percentage points of the Royals (79-64) atop the American League Central.

Rajai Davis and J.D. Martinez both homered in the game, as Detroit took a 3-0 lead after two innings. Kansas City made an attempt at a comeback in the fifth on an RBI single by Omar Infante, but could not complete the big inning against Scherzer.

Last year's Cy Young winner only gave up seven hits and four walks, but did strike out six to improve to 16-5 on the year. Closer Joe Nathan almost gave up the lead, allowing a pair of infield singles in the ninth, but finished the job to earn his 30th save of the year.

The Tigers, who had been scuffling in August, have stayed in the pennant race thanks to impressive play against Kansas City. Detroit is 11-4 this season against the Royals and can sweep their division rivals on Wednesday.

Both teams did leapfrog the Seattle Mariners for the second wild card spot on Tuesday, thanks to Seattle's 2-1 loss to Houston.

Royals’ Danny Duffy Will Miss Next Start

BananaStock/Thinkstock(DETROIT) -- Kansas City Royals pitcher Danny Duffy will miss his next start due to rotator cuff inflammation, the team announced Monday.

Duffy underwent an MRI and examination on Sunday and general manager Dayton Moore said his starter's left shoulder is "structurally sound," but that he will miss his next scheduled start "and will require three, four days' rest before being re-evaluated."

Duffy is 8-11 and has a 2.42 ERA in 29 games this season.
