Tigers Beat Royals, Earn Tie Atop AL Central

Tigers Beat Royals, Earn Tie Atop AL Central

David Banks/Getty Images(DETROIT) -- Max Scherzer gave up just one run in six and two-thirds innings, helping the Detroit Tigers defeat Kansas City 4-2 on Tuesday night. The victory pulled Detroit (80-65) within percentage points of the Royals (79-64) atop the American League Central.

Rajai Davis and J.D. Martinez both homered in the game, as Detroit took a 3-0 lead after two innings. Kansas City made an attempt at a comeback in the fifth on an RBI single by Omar Infante, but could not complete the big inning against Scherzer.

Last year's Cy Young winner only gave up seven hits and four walks, but did strike out six to improve to 16-5 on the year. Closer Joe Nathan almost gave up the lead, allowing a pair of infield singles in the ninth, but finished the job to earn his 30th save of the year.

The Tigers, who had been scuffling in August, have stayed in the pennant race thanks to impressive play against Kansas City. Detroit is 11-4 this season against the Royals and can sweep their division rivals on Wednesday.

Both teams did leapfrog the Seattle Mariners for the second wild card spot on Tuesday, thanks to Seattle's 2-1 loss to Houston.

Royals’ Danny Duffy Will Miss Next Start

Royals’ Danny Duffy Will Miss Next Start

BananaStock/Thinkstock(DETROIT) -- Kansas City Royals pitcher Danny Duffy will miss his next start due to rotator cuff inflammation, the team announced Monday.

Duffy underwent an MRI and examination on Sunday and general manager Dayton Moore said his starter's left shoulder is "structurally sound," but that he will miss his next scheduled start "and will require three, four days' rest before being re-evaluated."

Duffy is 8-11 and has a 2.42 ERA in 29 games this season.

SP Ventura Will Miss Wednesday’s Start

SP Ventura Will Miss Wednesday’s Start

Rich Pilling/MLB Photos via Getty Images(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) -- Kansas City Royals skipper Ned Yost has elected to scratch pitcher Yordano Ventura from his start Wednesday while the rookie deals with a sore back. Ventura complained of pain in his lower back after his start last Friday night against the Rangers. An MRI revealed inflammation but no damage. The Royals are currently 1.5 games ahead of the Detroit Tigers for first place in the American League Central."There's the hope that he's not going to miss anything more. He's made good progress to this point. He's feeling much better," Yost said. "We could try to push it, but it doesn't make much sense right now. Let him get through it."The Royals called up 25-year-old Liam Hendriks from Triple-A Omaha to take Ventura's place. Hendriks has pitched 143 innings this season split between Omaha and Buffalo. During that time, he has compiled a 12-2 record with a 2.45 ERA, 126 strikeouts and 13 walks.Ventura has been solid all season for the Royals, posting a 10-9 record with a 3.40 ERA and 125 strikeouts in 145 2/3 innings pitched.

Royals Acquire OF Josh Willingham from Twins

Royals Acquire OF Josh Willingham from Twins

Robbie Rogers/MLB Photos via Getty Images(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) --  In attempt to bolster their lineup, the Kansas City Royals have acquired outfielder Josh Williingham from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for minor league pitcher Jason Adam.

Willingham was hitting just .210 this season for the Twins, but the Royals were looking to add power to their lineup and were intrigued by the 35-year-old.  Just two years ago he hit 35 home runs and drove in 110 runs for Minnesota.

"Obviously the goal was to win with the Twins," Willingham said upon hearing about the trade. "Unfortunately, we weren't. Now I have a chance to go help another club and hopefully make the playoffs."

Willingham is expected to play Tuesday night when the Royals take on the Oakland Athletics at home.

The Royals hope Willingham will help the team make the playoffs for the first time since 1985, when they beat the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series.

Royals Take AL Central Lead with Win

Royals Take AL Central Lead with Win

Rich Pilling/MLB Photos via Getty Images(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) -- Just over a week ago, Kansas City was five games behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central. Now, the Royals (64-53) won their eighth straight on Monday and overtook the Tigers in the division race with a 3-2 win over Oakland.

Kansas City jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after two innings, but Brandon Moss singled home a pair of runs for the Athletics (72-46) in the third to tie the game.

It remained deadlocked until Alcides Escobar singled in a run in the seventh, giving the Royals a 3-2 advantage.

Yordany Ventura out dueled Sonny Gray by allowing two runs on two hits over six innings. Gray went seven strong, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out a pair.

Kansas City was able to gain the top spot in the AL Central when Pittsburgh defeated Detroit 11-3. It marks the latest point in the season since 2003 that the Royals have been in first place.

"You want to be in first place. Our goal was to get back to first place," said Royals manager Ned Yost, who has won eight games in a row. "Now our goal is to stay in first place."

Royals’ Eric Hosmer Out 3-6 Weeks with a Broken Finger

Royals’ Eric Hosmer Out 3-6 Weeks with a Broken Finger

Rich Pilling/MLB Photos via Getty Images(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) -- The Kansas City Royals will be without one of their best players in a time when they're fighting for a playoff spot as first baseman Eric Hosmer will miss the next 3-6 weeks with a stress fracture of his right hand's third finger.

On Thursday night, Hosmer re-injured his finger on a check-swing during the team's game against the Minnesota Twins.

"Very frustrating, bad timing," Hosmer said.

Hosmer originally injured the finger on July 20 when he was hit by a pitch by Jon Lester, causing him to skip six of the team's next seven games.

Hosmer struggled early on this season, but was finally showing life at the plate recently. In 104 games this season, the 24-year-old Hosmer is hitting .267 with six home runs and 46 RBIs.

The Royals sit at 55-52 and are in second place in the AL Central. With the Detroit Tigers recent acquisition of starting pitcher David Price, the Royals could use Hosmer's bat in a lineup that ranks 18th in the Majors in runs scored.

Red Sox Sweep Royals Behind Lester’s Gem

Red Sox Sweep Royals Behind Lester’s Gem

Lisa Blumenfield/Getty Images(BOSTON) -- Jon Lester tossed eight shutout innings, striking out eight batters in a 6-0 Red Sox win over Kansas City on Sunday. The win was the fourth in a row for Boston (46-52), giving them a sweep over the Royals (48-49) at Fenway Park.

The Boston ace dominated, allowing no earned runs for the third time in four starts.

Throughout the 2014 season, the talk about Lester off the field has been surrounding his impending free agency. The southpaw can become a free agent at the end of the season and has been pitching without negotiating a new contract during the year. In his last seven starts, Lester is 4-0 with a 0.85 earned run average.

"You've got to take each one as an individual," Lester said. "If I'm out there thinking about what I did last time, I'm not worried about the right things."

His offense gave Lester more than enough run support, beginning in the first with an RBI groundout from Dustin Pedroia. Daniel Nava drove in three runs on the day, including a two-run double in the third. The game was blown open in the fourth after David Ross' two-run home run made it a 5-0 Red Sox lead.
