Keselowski: Everyone Has a Shot

Keselowski: Everyone Has a Shot

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images For NASCAR(NEW YORK) -- The chase for the Sprint Cup title is down to eight drivers headed into Martinsville Speedway on Sunday.

Brad Keselowski had to win last weekend to get into the Eliminator round and found a way to win in the final laps at Talladega. Still, he feels it's anyones game right now.

"Everyone has a strength," Keselowski said of the final drivers remaining. "It really is pretty open to me."

Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman, Matt Kenseth, Jeff Gordon and Carl Edwards will join Keselowski.

Hamlin is hoping to continue his run of success at Martinsville. "It's been a great track for us," Hamin said on Tuesday. "No one saw us winning last year, we were running like 15th every week and all of a sudden we went to Homestead, it's hard to pinpoint the favorites and underdogs at this point."

Gordon and his team have had success at every single track in this round, so he's betting on Martinsville.

"This to me is where we're going to shine," Gordon said. "There's such a realistic chance for us to not only win one or a couple of these races coming up, but seriously get ourselves to Homestead with a shot at winning this thing."

Brad Keselowski Survives Round, Wins at Talladega

Brad Keselowski Survives Round, Wins at Talladega

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images For NASCAR(TALLADEGA, Ala.) -- Brad Keselowski is into the eliminator round after holding off Matt Kenseth at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday.

Keselowski needed to win in order to stay alive in the chase for the championship and took the lead during the final caution flag in the green-white checkered finish.

The win comes after last weekend's post-race brawl between Kenseth and Keselowski, but Keselowski will take a win no matter what.

"I know there's probably some people out there that aren't really happy I won. I can understand that. But I'm a man like anyone else and not real proud of last week," Keselowski said of last weekend's post-race brawl at Charlotte.  "But I'm real proud of today."

"It was funny how this racing world works out. I don't know why it is that way. I don't know why it seems like every week where there's either a fight in the garage or a mishap or something like that happens, those two cars and people end up together."

Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kasey Kahne, and defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson were all eliminated from the Chase for the Championship.

Jeff Gordon, a Hendrick teammate of the three who were eliminated, said it's tough to see them go out that way.

"Great teams, great drivers, great friends. I hate to see them not in there," Gordon said about Johnson, Earnhardt and Kahne. "I really thought the chances of two of them getting in were very good, and certainly one of them. I thought two of us would be in there, and I thought there's a decent chance three could be there."

Gordon, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman, Denny Hamlin, and Kenseth are all moving onto the next round.

Keselowski, Stewart Fined for Postrace Altercation

Keselowski, Stewart Fined for Postrace Altercation

BannanaStock(NEW YORK) -- Brad Keselowski and Tony Stewart were fined on Tuesday for their altercation following Saturday night's NASCAR Sprint Cup race in Charlotte.

Stewart was fined $25,000 while Keselowski was hit with a $50,000 penalty. NASCAR issued a statement on Tuesday saying that the fines were "about maintaining a safe environment following the race."

Keselowski was involved in a pair of incidents on Saturday after the checkered flag, including a skirmish with Denny Hamlin.

After hitting Matt Kenseth on pit road, the 2012 Sprint Cup champion inadvertently bumped into Stewart's car. Stewart retaliated by putting his car into reverse and backing into Keselowski.

Hamlin later followed Keselowski into the pits and was held back from confronting him, while Kenseth jumped Keselowski from behind. Members of both pit crews eventually broke up the ordeal.

Neither Hamlin nor Kenseth were disciplined.

Kevin Harvick Wins at Charlotte – Post Race Fight Ensues

Kevin Harvick Wins at Charlotte – Post Race Fight Ensues

Jamie Squire/ Getty Images(CHARLOTTE, NC) -- Kevin Harvick won the second race in the Sprint Cup Contender round at Charlotte Motor Speedway, guaranteeing himself a spot in the Eliminator round.

While Harvick was the winner, former champion Brad Keselowski's championship hopes took a huge blow.  Keselowski traded paint with Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin under a late yellow flag and the dust up spilled into the pits.

After the race, Hamlin threw a towel at Keselowski.  Kenseth, however took things to a personal level.  In between the racer's trailers Kenseth charged after Keselowski and put him in a headlock.  The two racers traded fists until officials and crew members could restrain the two.

"The race is over -- come back to pit road," Kenseth said of Keselowski "If you want to talk about it like a man, go do that. But if you want to wreck somebody on the racetrack with people standing around, that's just inexcusable."

Hamlin shared a similar sentiment, calling Keselowski desperate to save his title hopes and claiming "He's just out of control."

Keselowski saw things differently, stating that the other two were the instigators.

"I figured, if we're going to play car wars under yellow and after the race, I'll join, too," Keselowski said. "Those guys can dish it out, but they can't take it. I gave it back to them, and now they want to fight."

The final race of the Contender round wraps up next week at Talledega.

Kahne Wins in Atlanta; Stewart Crashes in Return

Kahne Wins in Atlanta; Stewart Crashes in Return

Chris Graythen/NASCAR via Getty Images(HAMPTON, Ga.) -- With only two races remaining before the NASCAR "Chase for the Cup," Kasey Kahne cemented his spot in the new postseason format, winning the Oral B USA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday.

Kahne had to hold off Matt Kenseth on a green-white checkered, but got a good jump on the restart to take the checkered flag. Kenseth did end up qualifying for the Chase on points by finishing second. Denny Hamlin finished third while Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards rounded out the top-5.

The 34-year-old first took the lead off a restart with 23 laps remaining and again surged to the front of the pack on the final restart. Harvick, who won the Nationwide race on Saturday, led 195 laps but made contact with Joey Logano on the final restart, denying him a weekend sweep.

Making his return to NASCAR three weeks after a crash that killed Kevin Ward, Jr. at a dirt track race in upstate New York, Tony Stewart blew out his right front tire on lap 172, ending his night in 41st place.

Logano Earns First Ever Win at Bristol

Logano Earns First Ever Win at Bristol

Chris Graythen/Getty Images for NASCAR(BRISTOL, Tenn.) -- Joey Logano had never won more than one race in a single Sprint Cup season. On Saturday he took his third checkered flag of 2014, holding off Brad Keselowski to win the IRWIN Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

"I feel like the Bristol night race is maybe the third- or fourth-biggest race of the year,'' Logano said after his first-ever win at the track. "Just the atmosphere before the race, if it doesn't pump you up, nothing does. It's just the baddest mamma jamma race track ever built.''

The 24-year-old passed Matt Kenseth with 44 laps remaining but had to hold off a late charge by Keselowski to earn the victory. Logano became the fifth driver this season to win three different races, joining Keselowski, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

Kenseth ended up finishing third and is still looking for the win that will clinch a spot in the "Race to the Chase." There are just two races remaining before NASCAR's playoff begins and Kenseth sits fifth in points standings, tops among non-winners looking to qualify.

Matt Kenseth Hoping for Success at Kentucky

Matt Kenseth Hoping for Success at Kentucky

Todd Warshaw/Getty Images for NASCAR(NEW YORK) -- Matt Kenseth is still seeking his first Sprint Cup victory of the season and is the defending race winner at Kentucky Speedway, where NASCAR will be on Saturday night.

Kenseth has three top-10 finishes in three starts and is hoping to get Joe Gibbs Racing in Victory Lane.

"I don't know if I would say our best opportunity," Kenseth said on Tuesday.  "I'm not even sure how many races we've run this year, 15 or 16, but I feel like the way we ran last year, any one of those races with the exception of maybe last weekend would have been a good chance for us to get up there and get a win."

Kenseth sits 11th in the standings, but one win gives Joe Gibbs Racing a better chance at a Chase berth.

"You know, we'll see what happens," Kenseth continued.  "It was a good track for us last year for sure, so you know, hopefully we'll get there this weekend and have some speed and hopefully be a factor."

Jimmie Johnson Wins Second Consecutive Sprint Cup Race

Jimmie Johnson Wins Second Consecutive Sprint Cup Race

Jerry Markland/Getty Images(DOVER, Del.) -- Jimmie Johnson is at it again.  The six-time Sprint Cup champion took home the checkered flag for the second consecutive weekend after a win at Dover International Speedway on Sunday.

Johnson won last weekend's Coca-Cola 600.

Brad Keselowski won the pole and made a late rally, but fell short and finished in second.

"It's amazing that we can stay on top of things here with the different generation car, different rules, different tires," Johnson said. "This place just fits my style and (crew chief) Chad Knaus' style."

Kyle Busch's bid at a sweep this weekend took a turn for the worst after the No. 18 Toyota slammed into the wall 124 laps into the 400-lap race and was forced into the garage. Busch won the Nationwide Series race earlier in the weekend.

Matt Kenseth, Clint Bowyer and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top five.
