Netherlands Storm Back in Final Minutes to Oust Mexico

VI Images via Getty Images(FORTALEZA, Brazil) — The Netherlands tied the game in the 88th minute and then netted a penalty kick in stoppage time to beat Mexico, 2-1, Sunday and advance to the World Cup quarterfinals.
Wesley Sneijder smashed a shot from outside the penalty box into the back of the net in the 88th minute when the ball was headed to him off a corner.
The Dutch earned a penalty kick in the second minute of stoppage time when Arjen Robben was tripped up in the box by Rafael Marquez. Robben asked teammate Klaas-Jan Huntelaar if he wanted to take the kick, and Huntelaar obliged, making the kick and giving Holland the lead for good.
“You don’t know when your chance will come, but it was today, and so you grab it with both hands,” Huntelaar said, who was substituted in for Robert van Persie in the 76th minute. “And it was fantastic.”
Mexico has now lost in the Round of 16 in their last six World Cups.
Meanwhile, the Netherlands advance to the quarterfinals, where they’ll meet Costa Rica on Saturday. The match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Eastern. You can watch that on ESPN.

Mexico Advances to Knockout Stage with 3-1 Victory Over Croatia

Mexico Advances to Knockout Stage with 3-1 Victory Over Croatia

Laurence Griffiths/Getty Images(RECIFE, Brazil) — Mexico scored three goals in ten minutes of the second half to top Croatia 3-1 and advance to the Round of 16 at the World Cup. Mexico secures the two-seed in Group A and will now take on the Netherlands Sunday in Fortaleza. The score was tied nil-nil going into the second half, but Mexico erupted starting in the 72nd minute when Rafael Marquez sent a header past Croatian goalie Stipe Pletikosa. Just three minutes later, Mexico scored again, when Andres Guardado smashed a left-footed one-timer from 12 yards out into the back of the net. The Mexicans finished their scoring barrage seven minutes later when Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez headed in a shot that deflected off teammate Marquez’s head.

Ochoa Leads Mexico to Draw with Brazil

Ochoa Leads Mexico to Draw with Brazil

FABRICE COFFRINI/AFP/Getty Images(FORTALEZA, Brazil) — Brazil had many scoring opportunities but could not slip one past Mexican goal keeper Guillermo Ochoa, leading the two countries to a 0-0 draw at the World Cup Tuesday. Ochoa was remarkable in net, making six saves — many from point-blank range — tying the country’s record for most saves by a keeper in a World Cup match since 1966. Ochoa started his masterful performance in the 26th minute when he dove to the right side of the net just in time to stop a header from Brazilian star, Neymar. Ochoa continued to thwart Brazil’s offensive attacks the rest of the game, resulting in Mexico’s first point ever versus Brazil in a World Cup game. “In the end, a 0-0 mirrors what happened, it was a very hard-fought match,” Brazilian head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said. “The draw wasn’t a good result because a victory would have already allowed us to advance, but we need to be able to respect our opponent, which played very well.”
The game leaves both Mexico and Brazil with four points after two games in Group A play, with Brazil holding the goal differential tiebreaker.
