Mets’ Matt Harvey Concedes He Likely Won’t Pitch this Season

Mets’ Matt Harvey Concedes He Likely Won’t Pitch this Season

Norm Hall/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — After a breakout 2013 campaign that was cut short because of Tommy John surgery, New York Mets starting pitcher Matt Harvey will likely not pitch during the 2014 season.

The Cy Young candidate expected to come back late this season, but he realizes it likely won’t happen.

“I’m always going to be on board with what they have to say,” Harvey said. “I can only do so much, and speak my two cents. As a competitor, I’m always going to want to get out there, but I can’t write myself out there and set up my own program, so whatever they have set up is obviously the way we’re going to go.”

Harvey made 26 starts for the Mets last season and emerged as one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. He wound up going 12-10 with a 2.39 ERA. He also struck out 191 batters in 178.1 innings pitched.

Johan Santana Tears Achilles in Comeback Bid

Johan Santana Tears Achilles in Comeback Bid

Jim McIsaac/Getty Images(BALTIMORE, Md.) — Johan Santana has gone from of the games more dominant pitchers, to one of baseball’s more tragic stories. After being struck by a line drive and stumbling to field the ball in extended spring training, it was revealed that Santana suffered a torn Achilles tendon.

The injury is the latest in a string of devastating blows over the past couple seasons. A two-time Cy Young winner, Santana signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles in March after undergoing his second shoulder surgery in as many years.

“The skills are there. He’s been able to rehab his arm, but now he’s got another challenge,” said Orioles vice president of baseball operations. “He was pitching well. The last time out he had his velocity and he was able to back-door his slider.  After (Friday), he was going to come up and join the major league team, and we were going to continue the rehab in (Double-A) Bowie.”

The 35-year-old had his contract purchased from Triple-A Norfolk and was placed on the major league disabled list on Monday. Santana has not pitched in the Majors since 2012 while with the New York Mets.

Farnsworth Signs With Astros

Farnsworth Signs With Astros

Christian Petersen/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) — Reliever Kyle Farnsworth signed a contract for the rest of the season with the Houston Astros Saturday.

The signing comes just days after the New York Mets released the 38-year-old Farnsworth.

“You’re talking about a guy who has experience as a closer,” Astros skipper Bo Porter said. “He’s pitched high-leverage innings the last 10 years of his career and he’s been here, he’s done it.”

He’s done it this year as well. Farnsworth pitched 17 innings for the Mets this season saving three games while compiling a 3.18 ERA and 10 strikeouts.

Farnsworth has 57 career saves.

Mets Cut Kyle Farnsworth

Mets Cut Kyle Farnsworth

Christian Petersen/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — The New York Mets sent down pitcher Kyle Farnsworth on Wednesday to save $750,000 in salary.

Farnsworth was outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas after Wednesday night’s 4-0 loss to the Yankees.

“Hopefully [I'll]  find a team to play against this team,” said Farnsworth, who has the right to refuse the contract. “I’m very bitter right now.”

Farnsworth was added to the Mets roster on April 2 and appeared in 19 games for the Mets. He had a 3.18 ERA and three saves in four chances.

“I did a pretty good job for the opportunity I got,” he said. “I definitely got a fair opportunity starting from spring training.”

Farnsworth signed an advance consent letter before the season, which allowed the Mets to avoid paying his full contract if he was gone before the 45th day he was on the roster.

“I do understand it,” the 38-year-old veteran said. “It’s sad.”

Mets Place Starting Pitcher Dillon Gee on the DL

Mets Place Starting Pitcher Dillon Gee on the DL

Tony Firriolo/MLB Photos(NEW YORK) — Just as the New York Mets call up one of their prized pitching prospects, they lose a starting pitcher. The team has announced they’ve placed Dillon Gee on the disabled list with a strained right lat muscle.

According to Gee, he felt unusual soreness after his last start Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies. He felt the injury worsen when threw a bullpen session on Tuesday.

The team hopes that Gee will miss just two starts.

Rookie righthander Jacob deGrom will take Gee’s spot in the rotation. The team recently called up rookie Rafael Montero, who will be making his major league debut Wednesday against the New York Yankees.

This is a tough blow for the Mets, as Gee has been the team’s most consistent starter this season.

In 8 starts this season, the 28-year-old Gee has gone 3-1 with a 2.73 ERA.
