Simon Gagne Will Not Return This Season After Father’s Death

Simon Gagne Will Not Return This Season After Father’s Death

Frederick Breedon/Getty Images(BOSTON) -- Veteran forward Simon Gagne has decided he will not return to the team this season due to personal reasons. With the recent death of his father, Gagne will sit out the rest of the season, leaving the rest of his career in doubt.

"The last month has been extremely difficult for me with my father being sick and his passing," Gagne said in a statement released by the team. "To play in the NHL you have to be 100 percent mentally, emotionally and physically committed to the game. At this time I know that I cannot be close to those levels. The Bruins organization and my teammates have been great to my family and I during this time."

Gagne is now considered a suspended player so that the Bruins can maintain a full roster.

The 34-year-old Gagne is in his first season with the Bruins, and it could be his last. He has three goals and one assist in 23 games this season.

Gagne is a former All-Star from his years with the Philadelphia Flyers, but he's had trouble staying on the ice in recent years due to injuries. He's played in over 60 games just once since the 2009-2010 season.

Flyers Goalie Steve Mason Out Two Weeks with Knee Injury

Flyers Goalie Steve Mason Out Two Weeks with Knee Injury

Len Redkoles/Getty Images(PHILADELPHIA) -- The Philadelphia Flyers disappointing season could get worse as goaltender Steve Mason will miss the next couple weeks due to a "lower body injury."

Mason left Saturday's game against the Boston Bruins early in the first period, after making a save on Craig Cunningham.

It is unknown exactly when Mason will be able to return, but he could make his return after the All-Star break.

"It's hard to say," Flyers general manager Ron Hextall told CSNPhilly.com of Mason's return. "We'll see how things go with Mase and when he's ready to play. If he's ready to play, I'm assuming he'll play whenever that game may be. He's obviously our No. 1 guy and we want him back. But if it's after the break, it's after the break."

In his third season in Philadelphia, Mason is 8-12-6 with a 2.46 goals-against average and .920 save percentage.

Ray Emery will take over as the team's starter while Rob Zepp will serve as the backup.

At the halfway point of the season, the Flyers are 16-19-7, the sixth-worst record in the NHL.

Flyers Acquire RJ Umberger, Draft Pick for Winger Scott Hartnell

Flyers Acquire RJ Umberger, Draft Pick for Winger Scott Hartnell

Bruce Bennett/Getty Images(PHILADELPHIA) -- The Philadelphia Flyers have traded a fan favorite for a familiar face. The team announced on Monday that they traded winger Scott Hartnell to the Columbus Blue Jackets for center R.J. Umberger and a fourth-round draft pick.

Umberger is no stranger to Philadelphia. He spent the first three seasons of his career with the team, but was traded to the Blue Jackets back on June 20, 2008.

"He's a versatile player, a good skater, a good two-way player," Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said. "He plays all three positions and can kill penalties. He is an attractive guy for us moving forward."

In 74 games last season, Umberger scored 18 goals and had 16 assists for the Blue Jackets.

Hartnell spent the past seven seasons with the Flyers, and was one of their key offensive players on the first line with Claude Giroux. He scored 20 goals and added 32 assists for the Flyers last season in 78 games played.
