Phillies’ Chase Utley Has No Desire to Be Traded

Phillies’ Chase Utley Has No Desire to Be Traded

Jonathan Ferrey/Getty Images(MINNEAPOLIS) — Even though the Philadelphia Phillies have seen better days, long-time second baseman Chase Utley will not seek a trade from the only team he’s ever suited up for.
“The grass isn’t always greener on the other side,” he said Monday. “I’ve picked some brains over the course of the last few years. I really enjoy Philadelphia. I love playing baseball in Citizens Bank Park. I love playing in front of Philly fans.”
“There’s no better place to play in my opinion. Obviously winning is important and you want to do that, and I would like to do that in Philadelphia,” he continued.
Entering the All-Star break, the Phillies are 42-53, which is last in the NL East.
Meanwhile, Utley is in his twelfth season with the Phillies, and is owed $15 million next season as part of a deal that contains options for $15 million in each of three additional years that could become guaranteed if he has 500 plate appearances in the previous season and doesn’t finish the season hurt.
During his career, Utley has hit 225 home runs, driven in 854 runs, has batted .288, and won a World Series with the team in 2008.

Cliff Lee Set to Return to the Phillies After the All-Star Break

Cliff Lee Set to Return to the Phillies After the All-Star Break

Jim McIsaac/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — With the Philadelphia Phillies fading fast in the standings, they could use all the help they can get. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced that they expect starting pitcher Cliff Lee back after the All-Star break.
Lee is recovering from a strained left elbow, and is eying a return to the rotation July 19. He hasn’t started for the Phillies since May 18.
The 35-year-old Lee made his first rehab start on Sunday, but he was limited to just 24 pitches for Class-A Clearwater due to poor weather.
Still, Lee remains one of the most consistent pitchers in Major League Baseball.
With the Phillies staring at another losing season, Lee is one of their biggest trade chips. The sooner he can prove he’s healthy, the better chance the team can get a good return for him.
Lee is signed through 2015 and has a minimum of $50 million left on his contract over the next season and a half. That figure could grow to $62.5 million if he vests his option for 2016.

Utley’s Homer Helps Phils Walk-Off in 14 Innings

Utley’s Homer Helps Phils Walk-Off in 14 Innings

Rich Schultz/Getty Images(PHILADELPHIA) — An error by Jeff Baker in the bottom of the seventh allowed Philadelphia to tie things up before Chase Utley launched a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the 14th giving the Philles a 5-3 win over Miami on Thursday night.
Philadelphia (36-42) did not lead until Utley’s blast as the Marlins (39-40) got home runs from three different players. Jerrod Saltalamacchia opened the scoring with a solo shot in the third before Giancarlo Stanton made it a 2-0 lead with a homer of his own in the fourth.
The Phillies slowly chipped away, scoring runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. It was an Utley single in the fifth that tied things up for Philadelphia. After Marcell Ozuna broke the tie with a homer in the top of the seventh, Baker’s error allowed Dominic Brown to score the tying run again.
It remained 3-3 for the next six innings, but not without some chances. The Marlins put the go-ahead run on base in every inning except the 13th, loading the bases in the eighth. However, Philadelphia’s bullpen held strong and were rewarded by Utley’s heroics.
After Rollins reached on an infield single to open the bottom of the 14th, Utley hammered a pitch to right, sending the hometown fans home happy. It was the sixth homer of the year for Utley.

Phillies Sign Grady Sizemore to Minor League Deal

Phillies Sign Grady Sizemore to Minor League Deal

Michael Ivins/Boston Red Sox/Getty Images(PHILADELPHIA) — Less than a week after he was let go by the Boston Red Sox, the Philadelphia Phillies have signed outfielder Grady Sizemore to a minor league deal.
“I know Boston gave him the opportunity to play, and he had some level of success, and then he did struggle at times,” Phillies GM Ruben Amaro said, “but we’ll see what he’s got in the tank. We believe in the athlete. We’ll see what he’s got left.”
Injuries had kept Sizemore out of baseball for two full seasons. He signed with the Red Sox during their offseason and he got off to a great start, but his production faded as the season went on. In 52 games this season, the 31-year-old Sizemore hit .216 with two home runs and 15 RBIs.
The Phillies are rolling the dice on Sizemore in an effort to jolt their offense. They rank 22nd in Major League Baseball in runs scored.

Rollins Sets Phillies Hit Record

Rollins Sets Phillies Hit Record

Mitchell Leff/Getty Images(PHILADELPHIA, Pa.) — Jimmy Rollins went 1-for-4 for the Phillies in a 7-3 win over the Chicago Cubs at home. His one hit, however, broke Mike Schmidt’s franchise record for hits in a career of 2,234.
The game was briefly delayed in the fifth for a brief celebration that Schmidt participated in. A Hall of Famer, Schmidt retrieved the bat for Rollins before delivering it to him at first, along with a hug and a high-five.
“I told him, `Congrats, it couldn’t happen to a better guy,” Schmidt said later in the game. “I’m glad I was here. My heart is pounding.”
Rollins received a standing ovation in each of his at-bats, but grounded out and lined out in his first two attempts at the record. The shortstop would later score in the fifth on Dominic Brown’s three-run homer that put the game out of reach.
Chase Utley also homered as Philly won their fourth game in five tries. Schmidt’s record had stood since 1989 before Rollins took it over.

Phillies Place Third Baseman Cody Asche on the DL

Phillies Place Third Baseman Cody Asche on the DL

Photos.com/Thinkstock(PHILADELPHIA) — Just as he was starting to come around at the plate, the Philadelphia Phillies have placed third baseman Cody Asche on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring.
Asche hurt his hamstring Friday night in the team’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team sat him out for the weekend, but decided a trip to the disabled list was best for him.
“There wasn’t much improvement,” Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro told CSNPhilly.com. “Rather than risk it turning into something long term, we decided to be cautious so it doesn’t linger.”
After hitting just .161 during the month of April, Asche was finally figuring things out. In the month of May, he was hitting .317 with a .406 on base percentage.
Right-hander Justin De Fratus was called up to take Asche’s place on the Phillies roster.
The team is now considering calling up top-prospect Maikel Franco to play third base.

Josh Beckett No-Hits the Phillies

Ron Vesely/MLB Photos via Getty Images(PHILADELPHIA) — Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Josh Beckett’s bounce back season continued Sunday when he no-hit the Philadelphia Phillies.
Chase Utley struck out looking for the final out of the game, as Beckett throws the 21st no-hitter in Dodgers’ franchise history.
Beckett retired 23-straight at one point before walking Jimmy Rollins in the ninth inning. He finished the game with three walks and six strikeouts to lead the Dodgers to a 6-0 victory.
It was the first no-hitter thrown in the major leagues this season, and the first no-hitter for the Dodgers since 1996, when Hideo Nomo did it.
The 34-year-old Beckett, who has been dealing with various injuries the past couple seasons, now has a 3-1 record to go along with a 2.43 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 52 strikeouts in 55 2/3 innings pitched.
